5HP-24 transmission secret
Hello all, Had a horrible sound start between 1st and 2nd when the trans was cold. Changed the ATF 3 times with new cheep filter each time. no change. Changed the pressure regulator valve assy. from Transco and
this seemed to let trans shift smother(trans has 60,000 mi). Still made squilly sound when cold unless I was very careful. Then remembered something in the threads about factory filter being better but could not find the thread again. So, bit the bullet and ordered German made filter and changed filter and fluid again!
YAHOO!!! 2000 miles and still no sounds. Trans shift very well.
Called a well known trans rebuilder of these transmissions in the US and he said Chinese filter no issue. What a crock... use only German made filter or have your trans turn to junk after 60,000 mi. Feel free to ignore the advice, but rebuilders want to rebuild your trans, not fix it over the phone. Good Luck from Katlover

Katlover,
Nice name BTW.
This is well known problem with aftermarket ATF filters. Gary F’s Youtube channel has a lot on this. Check out at 11:30 on the link below.
Basically don’t go cheap on this part. (NB: I’m even Chinese)

Yes, I'd also read that aftermarket filters were best avoided. ZF original is a Filtran part.
Cheaper than Jaguar if you order the Landrover part (# LPW 000030). I paid just over 30 GBP.

Those pan bolts come out way easier if your transmission is warm. While it's warmed up loosen your fill plug also.
I had the cracked valve body casting issue causing it to pop out of gear when stopping when it was hot.
I also ended up having to replace the cheap filter with the genuine ZF part.
I used the Valvoline Max Life multi-vehicle fluid. I looked up the specs and it has very similar viscosity and actually a better viscosity index than the BMW fluid. Seems to be working fine.
