97 XK8 GEARBOX PROBLEM
IT STARTED WITH AN INTERMITTENT FAULT. SOMETIMES THE CAR WOULD NOT CHANGE GEAR. IF I RESTARTED, IT WOULD RUN AND CHANGE UP NORMALLY, EXCEPT IF I TRY TO MANUALLY SELECT 3 OR 2. THEN THE CAR WILL SHOW "GEARBOX FAULT" AND ENGAGE LIMP MODE. THE FAULT IS NO LONGER INTERMITTENT. IT WILL NOT CHANGE UP. THE GEARBOX OIL HAS BEEN CHANGED TWICE WITH NO IMPROVEMENT. LOCAL DEALER WILL ONLY CHANGE THE GEARBOX, IT SEEMS DRASTIC AS SOMETIMES IT WORKS PERFECTLY. THANKS FOR READING AND FOR ANY ADVICE. NEIL

3 Specialist Jaguar dealers told me the gearbox needed changing and that they had seen this fault many times.
I had a gearbox specialist look at it and he diagnosed as the inhibitor switch faulty. (sensor on gearbox telling computer where you have the gearshift selector).
At £300 a bargain repair.
I'm so dissapointed all of the "experts" on line could not help.

Reading this problem and its subsequent solution, it occurred to me that it would be nice to have a 'sticky' thread maybe titled 'Typical XK8/XKR Problems and Solutions'. Then the next person with a gearbox problem similar to this could quickly scan that thread to see if there is a solution.
