Default 98 XK8 Airbag light blnking 3 2 code

I have a 98 XK8 with 98k miles and have just had a new clock spring (UNNECESSARY) and now the airbag light driver side is blinking a 3 2 code, I have searched many threads but am unable to find that code. I bought a JTIS CD manual but cannot find the cross over for those code. I know that there are people out there who know where these code will locate the problem, would someone please tell what this code is and where I could find the rest of the codes as I am sure that I WILL NEED THEM IN THE FUTURE. I am THANKFUL for any help you good people can give. This Forum has already saved my engine by telling me indirectly to change out chain tensioners. Thanks to all that share their knowledge to the rest of us.

Here's a link with the codes, but I don't think it has a 3,2 listed.

Default Flash code32

Thanks Mike, That is what I found so I re-counted them again, I thought maybe as the codes were 2003, well, that's a straw indeed. I am stumped unless someone can shed a light on the issue. It all started as a light issue, no lights unless I bottomed the wheel out at both ends of travel. I felt that It was a ground problem, the shop said it check to be the coil sprig this was changed though I had horn, cruise etc. He finished up changeing a red ground wire to another position, lights stay on. Do they use red for ground wires, I always thought black was ground, anyway that's my problem.

Couple of thoughts: First, looking through JTIS, the only reference I can find to faults in the SRS system for MY98 is under the DTC button. Check through the Bxxxx codes. The last three describe troubles associated with no Airbag light, continuous light and a continuous flashing light - but no flash codes that are listed with DTCs for later models - even then, no 32!

Can you get the B codes read? It needs a specialist Jaguar scanner (especially for very early models?)

You're right that ground wires are not red! Either black or, for switched grounds, black/pink

Default code 32

That's a place to start, THANKS, ASTROMORG.I talked to the dealer (who has just cleaned house in their service department) They said that the ignition key have to be in the correct position before removal of the airbag. I know the shop had the key out. Dealer would read and reset for $140 but I don't trust them, I lay odd's that I wouldn't get out for less than a $1000' These are the same people who didn't have a clue when I went to them with our XF when I thought the winter mode is not working correctly ( still don't ) They were reading my owners manual to see how it works. This code reader, is that a dealer only item or could a independent have it, we have a Jag man at a shop I have just found though the Forum, I will try him. Have a great THANKS GIVING and Thank you all for your help.

I didn't think Flash Codes were in use as early as the 1998 MY ................?

The airbag warning lamp is either OFF, ON or BLINKING continuously (if the sensors are disconnected) and the only diagnostics available is through stored DTC's.

I think that's what I meant Graham! (Though I was a little wary as dww re iterated that the flashing was 3-2)

I'm VERY wary when it comes to anything to do with SRS. It took me a week to convince myself I had a Code 17 on my 2005 XK8 and then six months to fix it!

The first step in troubleshooting dww's issue has to be getting the 'B' codes read.

Either Jaguar Dealer or an Indy with dealer level diagnostics. The only DIY options are AutoEnginuity with Jaguar Enhancement or Mongoose.

I have set up for an ind. to read the code on Monday. I think that it's possible that the flash codes were on early US imports as I believe that airbags were law in the US quite early on, just a guess. Your idea to get the b-codes read is a sound one and a place to start. Thanks for your input, keep it coming.

All XK8/XKR left the factory with Driver and Passenger Airbags fitted. The difference is the (relative!) simplicity of your early SRS (Supplementary Restraint System) against that of later models with occupancy sensing.

Be interesting to see what codes the Indy finds.

That is very interesting, does that mean that I don't have the seatbelts etc. tied into the system.Going by the drawings that you sent me it would seem that 2003 was the time of the change or was it on a yearly/model basis. Thanks again, I will post the codes found and keep you abreast of my fight. Cheers, David

The Seat Belts are the 'restraint system'. The Airbags and other gizmos are the 'Supplementary Restraint System'.

You will have Pyrotechnic Seat Belt Pre-Tensioners on your 1998 with the mechanical sensing and retractor units installed at the base of the 'B' posts. These trigger in the event of a sufficiently severe frontal impact as do the Airbags.

What you won't have is the increasingly complicated occupancy sensing setup shown in the second diagram which was introduced in (I think) 2001MY.

Bad news, still got blinking lights 3 2 and then staying on though I'm calling them bloody blinking lights now. Indy. said that the computer was not responding to any signals and that I would have to take it to a dealer as he doesn't do airbag stuff. Bye the way, good luck at the dealers because they are all new and don't know anything, no history with the cars. Going to be a long fight, maybe the light will burn out first. I still don't know if the airbag is still operational, ah! well such is life

It's too much of a coincidence that this all started just after that work on the steering column and the lighting system - especially as you say the garage changed the position of a red wire, thinking it was a ground wire! Not good! ( I've had a quick look through the wiring diagrams for your MY and haven't even found a red wire in the steering column - others may well know better!)

Before you throw too much more money at this, it would be worth checking out the wiring around the steering column and the condition of all the connectors. Note that the only faults listed by Jaguar for a flashing SRS light in the 98MY are disconnected main wiring harness or both impact sensors disconnected.

I've also just had a look Astro, there is one red wire that goes directly to the drivers side airbag via a connector to the clockspring.
The only other red wire I found was to one of the steering wheel lift motors.

Don't know if that helps but that certainly should not be grounded.

Hope this helps,

You're right Jim! Got it now. That red wire would definitely not be a good one to re-route or disconnect! Bet that's where the problem is.

Thanks guy's, the clock spring is what he changed out. I think I'm going to have him replace it with the old one for a refund and put things as they were, though why moving that wire made the lights work is still a mystery. One question, does the ignition key play any part in removing the airbag I thought I read the key be turned to the II position or it would send a no bag present signal. I might also try the job myself and really know what's there instead of being told what's taking place.

I too have had my fair share of air bag problems as Astro & GGG may recall, over the 6 months of fixing my issues I gained much data on the subject, but.....code 32 is new one on me? the nearest is code 31 which would indicate the drivers air bag is shorted or open circuit. Sorry to say but air bag faults can only be really found by using IDS or SDD & the data logger facility within that system, other than that your disconnecting multiple plugs and measuring continuity which is well dodgy on the air bag system as you all know.
In all I spent a small fortune on SDD & the OBD cable to connect to the car but within 30mins of using the data logger facility it pointed me at the problem.
I agree that it must be in the steering column where your problem originates, looks to be a connection issue on replacing the CSS.

One mystery accounted for. Red ground wire is what he installed to ground the top of the column to the lower portion with a 8in. or so piece of red wire he had laying around, this also explains the light fix, bad ground some where. I am now wondering if an incorrect procedure was used in removal of the steering wheel and is now in the crash data and will have to be reset, is this possible. I have read that airbag lights fix themselves when the fault has been rectified, but there are rare times they have to be reset. Thanks for your input, I wouldn't have got this far without your help, THANKS AGAIN.

Can't say I'm OK with that red wire arrangement. There are no Jaguar installed ground points on the steering column, top or bottom, so installing the red wire as you describe would make no sense; unless the lighting stalk was faultily grounding on the upper column instead of through its Black/Pink wire. If there is such a fault, solving it by just grounding the ungrounded upper column to the lower column that just happens to be at 0v, but is not an approved ground, is curing the symptom and not the cause, if you get my drift!

Equally, if he's connected the Black/Pink via the red wire to the lower column, that's not good practice.

I think all the wiring in the column needs a good survey and probably repairing back to original spec!
