Default 98 xk8 starts but wont shift.

Wife's car had to be towed yesterday because she couldn't get shifter out of park. Engine starts and has been running well (75k miles) I think there's usually a slight click that sounds when the brake pedal is depressed to shift. No click sound now when you push the brake pedal. All fuses look ok. All brake lights working. Any advise would be appreciated.

Either the brake switch on the pedal has gone bad or the unlocking solenoid has failed. You can remove the small screw on the upper left side of the ski slope console (looks likes a star) and insert the key to move the lever out of park.
When you depress the brake you should here the solenoid unlock the shift lever to move it from park.
Do you get any dash indications of cruise not available?
Does the transmission shift normally while driving?

Transmission runs smooth. No cruise lights. Wondering if I should start with shift solenoid first or brake switch. She's afraid to drive the car till its fixed which is ok. What approach would you take?

Brake Switches are notorious for failure, it's more a when will I replace one vs will I need to replace one. Do a search and you'll see how many are replaced eventually. It's a DoItYourself job but a tad tricky but a search will give you links with directions and tips on how.

I agree that the brake switch is a known failure point and effects the shift solenoid. I think before throwing parts at it you should try to get the codes for the transmission read. If there is a good INDY mechanic with the JAG software you can get a better idea of the problem.
The shift out of park is dependent on the brake switch, the solenoid and the TCM linear switch. It is also possible that the shift cable may have slack and is giving the rotary switch the wrong position.
Brake light switch $200.00
Solenoid $150.00
Rotary Switch New $1,000.00 used $500.00
