'99 XK8 Transmission-Self Rebuild???
Need help, advice, warnings, links, networking....
My XK8 needs a rebuilt or reman transmission. Dealer wants $10k (rape) and best price from an independent is about $7,700.
Looking for options.
I see kits available for $500 and the manuals are out there, but I have no prior experience. Has anyone in the same boat done theirs? Need input. Please advise.

If it's just the A drum and replacing valve body, that's not difficult. I took the transmission out of my 97 to replace the rear main seal and removed the A drum to check for cracks while I had it out of the car. I have a lift which certainly made it easier than working on jack stands.
Dan,
As an able home “shade tree” mechanic, I too thought about “playing” with the transmission and looked into it here on this Forum. I had some knowledgeable feedback. As said above, simple repairs/upgrades are possible, but what if you hit a problem? The transmission specialist garages charge high prices as there’s a reason. When you’re inside the unit, the whole world of knowing what you’re looking at/for depends on experience. You may miss something and have to re-do.
Unless you’ve got time, and can afford to ditch/send off the unit later, I would just go for one of these specialists and bite the cost. They sometimes already have a reconditioned unit and will accept yours in part exchange. The Jag transmission is common.
Shop around and go for a reputable shop though. Lots of hacks out there.

Dan, I just went through this with my 98. Almost everyone was price fixed around here. Found an Amco that quoted $1,700 to rebuild, torque converter would be extra. Wound up going to a guy who gave similar prices.
Things to watch. Torque converter had to be replaced, cost about $250. They just couldn't be sure broken pieces didn't get into it.
I did have to spring for a new tranny cooler line. It cost $180.
BTW I saw some crazy price quotes like you are seeing too. Keep shopping I hope you find someone good.
