Default ABS/Stability Control Fail

Hello to all!

I've searched this forum and got a number of different ideas as to what causes the amber dash light indicating "Stability Control Fail" and ABS light on the dash to light up.

I jacked the car up to clean the sensors and found the wire going to the driver side sensor was flying loose due to corrosion. I removed the sensor, cleaned it, and repaired the wire on both sides, including the passenger side for good measure. Never even checked the rear sensors thinking that it HAD to be the detached wire.

I've continued getting the "Stability Control Fail" and ABS lights since. It sometimes goes and stays away for a day upon start up. Sometimes the ABS light only comes on and stays on for 10-15 seconds before it shuts off. Sometimes I may see no lights all day and then both will come on and stay on when the car is not moving.

What I have noticed is a pattern: If I start the car and have both lights on, the next startup will only activate the ABS light which shuts off after 10-15 seconds; the next startup will have no lights and the startup after that has both again.

I don't have an ABS code reader and battery function appears normal.

Any ideas?

Nick

Use this link on my page and goto the testing and check list. Also keep in mind that battery voltage could be part of the problem.

Thanks Gus. I'll go through the checklist.

Had an interestign one with an ABS fault.
RHF wheel circuit measured open circuit.
Sensor 1100 ohm, removed link lead and resistance was zero - OK. Put link lead back on and open circuit. Turned out link lead replaced in 2012 had a faulty connector crimp giving intermittent open circuit. The connector is readily available so replaced the connector and all is now well.

Now have flexible silicone cable and connectors available to make link leads as required!
