UPDATE:

Thanks for all the help. I now have the car back on the road and seem to have got back to full function without any major damage. I could not manage to figure our which terminals of the diodes for multimeter test.

In case this happens to anyone else, my experience of reverse polarity jump start from a running similar car applied to a dead battery on an XJ8 was blown fuses in both kickboards and in the boot. None blown in the engine fuse box. Hopefully no damage.

I like these,,, Because there might not ALWAYS be willing Jumper when you need them the most... And if you do reverse the polarity and screw their car up,,, Now you have a bigger problem... which neither of you can drive away from...

So check this out or something similar

i had a similar situation however instead of reverse polarity it was the positive lead touching a ground and it sparked.

now there NO POWER to anything, with a new battery, do you remember what fuses you replaced, did you have to replace any relays?

The OP hasn't been on the forum since November 2012, so I don't think he'll give you much guidance. If absolutely everything is dead I'd start with the main fuses next to the battery (to the left of the battery in the wheel well).

There are two large primary power fuses in the trunk, behind the spare tire. Check those first.

followed the leads to what I thought is the main fuse under a black cap with a multi-meter tested both sides it receives 12 volts and the fuse box receives 12V

however the Fuse boxes in the Engine bay and Passenger side fuse box only receive 5 volts
any ideas?

See the wiring diagram here: http://jagrepair.com/images/AutoRepa.../jagxk2001.pdf

Particularly see pages 35 and 47. There are 2 mains fuses. If just the 250 amp fuse blew and not the 500 amp one, the ~5 volts you see could be due to leakage current through the starter circuit.
