Default Alarm/remote woes...

When I purchased my used 1999 XK8, the horn didn't sound off when I locked or unlocked my car.

I decided to check for dirty wiring contacts on the security module in the trunk, and when I unplugged one of the two groups of wires, the alarm went off.

I disconnected the battery wire...reconnected it and the alarm went off again.

I disconnected it once more, reconnected it and used the key in the drivers door to lock and unlock, and all is well...EXCEPT the fob remote doesn't work any more.

I looked in the archives here on how to reprogram the fob remote, but after repeted attempts, it just wont work.

Any ideas out there?

You need not touch another thing on that car. You must not have a thing to do!! I have a little snow that you can shovel of it will get you away from that car…

A . . . little . . . snow?

The key fob operations and the little honks are all part of the security module. Perhaps you could try a real hard reboot by disconnecting the battery and shorting the leads to drain all the little capacitive voltage in the system before you replace it. Never heard of any repairs to that unit.

Are you getting the shift console light flash when trying to program the fob?

I know, I know, Gus...but I'm trying to get my used car to operate like a new one (personal quest).

Yes, I am getting the flash, but of course no horn honk, as the horn was my problem from the beginning.

My horn doesn't honk on my 97 when I use the key fob. Is it supposed to?
I bought two additional fobs and got all three programmed after a number of trys (after I put the right flippin batteries in one of the new ones).

Both a '00 and '02 'honk' when locking or unlocking. Cannot speak to a '97.

Very short 'honk'. There were a lot of horns replaced on the early cars.

My 02 never honked. Way too unclassy. It gives a very sophisticated little chirp with a flash of the clearance lights as any well bred car should do

If I recall on my 95 xj6 it is a separate security speaker that emits the honk/tone/cherp. Have you looked into it? I am unable to find it on Alldata.

We presently have 20 in of snow and it is still coming down.

Default Found the Problem...

Thanks for the great replies, and sorry about the snow, Gus.

I had my top down (not me...the car) today driving in the sun with temps in the mid 70's. Gotta love the Phoenix Winters!

Anyhoo, I unscrewed the antenna jack from the security module for better access, and that's why it wasn't responding to the fob remote.

A quick connect, a quick reprogram, and all is well.

Now...I'll trace the wies to find the one that sends the signal to the horn (that's not working), add a relay and add a nifty-sounding security 'chirp' horn, and we should be good-to-go.

By the way, does anyone know what wire that would be on the security module in your All-Data information?

Thanks in advance, and as always...THIS SITE ROCKS!!!

My 01 doesn't sound the horn unless the alarm is tripped. Operating the keyfob sounds a separate chirp only.

My 95 xj6 & 93 xj-s not only had a separate “horn” for the security system I was given the option to have the “horn” sound or not when the security system was activated or deactivated. I would say it is part of the programming.

Gus had it right. There is a separate security speaker mounted " Rearward of the right hand headlamp.""

This first shows up on the wiring diagrams for "99. See no sign of it on earlier models.

Yes and it worked great the entire time. It is not designed for deep snow so what I did was take a pass several times as it was snowing.

Thanks for the info gang.

If it is a programming scenario, does anyone know how to toggle the 'chirp' (or horn) on?

Also, does anyone know exactly where this extra horn is located. When I bought this car, it previously had some front end damage, and there's a chance that the horn may be missing, but if I know exactly where it was located, it would make my job much easier.

Thanks in advance

On my 95 xj6 it is behind the headlight. I think it is behind the right headlight on my car. I am not with the car so I am unable to check right now. I do see that the alarm horn is $280.00
