Default battery replacement

I'm replacing battery on my 1998 XK8 convertible with a new Bosch battery...the one that's currently in there has a 2002 stamp, so I'm amazed it has lasted this long. Hopefully the new battery will resolve the drivers side window problem.

Is there anything that will need re-programmed after I remove battery cables, other than radio stations? I remember reading somewhere to touch the positive and negative cables together...

Thanks

Look in the Section How-Tos for battery disconnect.

if I do a 'hard reset by holding negative lead on positive post for 10 seconds', won't that cause a big spark? do you disconnect the positive lead also? I'm afraid I'm going to short something out..

I replaced the factory battery in our 2006 XK8 with a Bosch battery back in late September. Took my tools with me and did the battery swap-out in the Pep Boys parking lot where I purchased it. The car was without a battery for no more than fifteen minutes, probably less. Surprisingly, no resets were required after the swap-out. I expected to lose the radio station presets and drivers seat/mirrors settings, but they were magically retained....

Don't know if this will be the case for your 1998 model or not. But the quicker you can get your factory battery out and a new battery in place, the fewer reset issues you should have to deal with....

Congrats on getting more than ten years on your factory battery. Completely unheard of for these power-feasting cars....

No, you pull the -ve lead off the battery.
The battery is now only connected to the +ve post.
You touch the -ve lead to the positive post.
The -ve battery post is connected to nothing so you're not shorting the battery, just connecting the + and - leads supplying the various modules together so you drain their capacitors and force a reset.
It is exactly the same as pulling both +ve and -ve leads off the battery and connecting them together.

You have to do the window reset by holding the buttons up and down until you hear the click....don't know about seat and steering wheel memory, cause I don't use them. Guess you'll find out. Please don't short out the battery, cause yeah, that would be a big spark and ? explosion......
