Default Brake switch

I have a 1998 XK8 that often presents a problem shifting out of park. Sometimes I have to apply the brake pedal several times before I can shift out of park. I have searched the forums to find an answer and it looks as though the problem could be either in the brake light switch or the shift interlock switch. My question is which part is it more likely to be?

thanks

With the ignition on, if you listen carefully you should be bale to hear the interlock in the gear selector assembly click as you press the brake pedal.

If it doesn't click, or clicks intermittently, then you've found the cause of your problem.

Sorry, Graham, I have to differ with you, just a little bit. In your scenario, I think he will have found the RESULT of his problem rather than the cause. He very well could have an interlock fault, but my money is on an intermittent brake pedal switch. It's far more failure prone than the shifter in my experience.

Still friends???
