Hello, i asked my mechanic what he did. He said that there is a check valve in the filler tube that was stuck closed. He thinks it may be spring operated. He was able to push on it gently with a a probe and it came unstuck. No problems since.

Can you tell me what he used as the probe.

Thanks.

CCV solenoid binding.
The CCV is located on the passenger side inboard of the canister. It's a little square box with an inlet, straight through to the outlet, an electrical connection and held on with one 10mm nut. Slide back the rubber boot on the electrical connection and pop it off. The inlet and outlet hoses are held in place with spring clips. Release the tension on the clips and slide them back, then pry off the rubber hoses. Take off the 10mm nut and that's it to get it off. Then try to blow through it from both directions. My guess is the solenoid plunger is binding closed from fine rust. That's what I found with mine, today. I'd been fight this for several weeks. I pulled mine apart and cleaned it up put it back in, went to the gas station and viola, it took gas!
Hope this works for you.

can't fill gas tank
Simple fix..... charcoal canister on the passenger side....located underside...near the rear. There is a solenoid valve that is stuck closed. Remove the valve, put it in the open position and put it back in, or replace the solenoid valve. The valve is normally in the open position.
I removed the solenoid valve , freed it up from the closed position. Tested it with 12 volts, put it back in. Now there is no problem with filling the tank and no gas smell. On 2002 Xj8 Vanden plas.
