coil frustration
hi everybody,
New 1997 XK8 owner. Have seen quite a few threads where people have had problems starting the beast, but i cant find any that relate to mine. so if anyone can help it would be appreciated. goes a bit like this.
Turns over well but sometimes it starts with one turn sometimes it needs a dozen.
Checked compression with no real concerns.
Fuel pressure fine.
Tried resetting "flood" mode. No change.
Changed crank sensor and spark plugs.
Checked voltage on common feed to coils - no supply- but when supply is present, car starts.
Does the coil supply come directly from ECU or via a relay?
Thanks for reading.

The electrical schematic shows two leads from the ECM plus a ground and a lead from the fuel injector relay located in the ECM enclosure. That relay is the center one toward the front of the car.
If you want the schematic send me a PM with you direct email address so I don't have to go through the attachment process on internal messages.

thanks for the schematic TP. It has allowed me to track it back to the ignition relay which is experiencing the same intermittant 12v. Does anyone have any ideas b4 i chuck a load of cash at another ECU. I wondered if the key may be faulty.

Maybe not the key but the switch could indeed have a problem. Without pulling the schematic back out there has got to be a switched B+ from the ignition switch to the ECM that you could test for erratic voltage.
Have you removed the ECM, sprayed the connectors with a dielectric spray and reconnected? Couldn't hurt.
DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FIRST!
