Default Coil packs at a discount

When I first bought my 2000 XKR, the engine was not firing on a cylinder and the dash read "restricted performance". It turned out to be a bad coil pack on the #5 cylinder. The parts store wanted to sell a single new coil for $142, but I really wanted to replace all 8 coil packs. $1,200 seemed a little pricey.

I found this seller on e-bay that was selling them for $30! It sounded too good to be true, but purchased them anyway. Replaced all 8, and the engine is running much better. Yes, they were made in China... and I was very doubtful of the quality. But they seem just as sturdy as the old ones (made in Spain) and they were an exact fit.

No, I'm not the seller, I just wanted to pass this along to others who are looking for new coils without blowing a whole paycheck.

The coils will not fit the AJ26 engines, which all have two pin connectors, and I would keep the old coils just in case they don't hold up. Cheap replacements for the XJ6 X300 almost always fail early.

Tim - I've been running with these same coils for a couple of years now- no issues with them

RJ - I agree. The old "you get what you pay for" feeling. I worry if these will hold up to the heat. And also agreed, I have cleaned and stored all of the coils I removed

I paid $100 for all 8 for my XKR. They're a year old now and great. Still have my old ones since it was only two that went bad (coolant tank leak + coil cover gasket leak = bad coils).

I had put so many cheap parts on GM cars I've owned, my Grand Prix is a testament to eBay parts. I did an ebay lowest price shipped suspension rebuild on a 2001 Impala LS that my sister drives, and after 70k miles and 4 years, the car still drives as tight as it should (it is still a W body float boat lol). This was $43 for a PAIR of sealed hubs, $15 for a pair of outer tie rod ends, $70 for a pair of front control arms, $120 for a pair of quick struts. Yeah, VERY cheap stuff. I did the same to the 04 Grand Prix about a year ago and 7k miles.

It's not that the chinese parts are that good, it's that a lot of the OEM on some cars is just chinese parts from the factory. The Jaguars generally had much better parts than the W bodies, but sometimes the gap in price makes trying a cheap part worth a go.

A friend of mine bought a DB7 a couple of years back. When we were looking at the service records there was one for $10k to replace all of the coilpacks (yeah it was 12 not 8 but still. Puts even that 1200 into perspective.
