Default Dash lights (Diagnostics)

I am new to the forum and posted in the Newbie section as below:

Hi, I have always liked Jaguars ever since watching Arthur Daley in his early Jag :-) I have been talking to a friend who is not into his cars in terms of looking after them long term. He has offered me his October 2002 XK8 4.2 Auto. It is black with Black and Red trim. He is the second owner from new and bought it from Lancasters when it was three years old in 2005. He has always had it serviced, not always by Jaguar and just had a gearbox overhaul (£3.5k) new disks pads etc. It has tatty paintwork and a bubble on the rear quarter panel. It needs a new headlining and most of the lights are on, on the dash but all the work has been done just not by Jag to turn off the lights. Could a home diagnostic tool sort this?
It drives nice and sounds fine, I intend to tinker with it and hope it will increase in value, future classic?

All help appreciated.
Darren.

It was recommended that I post here to get advice on how to deal with turning the lights off on the dash, please help if you can?

Thank you

Welcome to the forum.
Do you mean the lights don't turn off when you shut the engine off and exit the car?

Hi Darren,

Could you tell us exactly which lights are on ? If you were weighing a buy no buy decision we would love to hear the asking price for perspective. In this case it sounds like you are trying to get a handle on what it would take to troubleshoot the issue.

Do any of these lights change status under any circumstances, like driving. Do you understand how sensitive the car is to battery voltage conditions ? You are sure to be asked about the battery health so please tell us what you can so we can narrow the issues.

We look forward to hearing more when you can.

Hi Jonken,

We have agreed on £5000 the current owner has always had it serviced and when a light came on a local guy did the work. When the gearbox needed doing in the last twelve months it cost him £3500. When the engine light came on he had it serviced when the brake lights came on he had new disks and pads, (about 2000 miles ago).

Car has no rattles in the engine and no smoke. It does have a clicking sound under the glove box, it sounds like a relay on rapid fire, it comes and goes every twenty or thirty seconds. Not driven it yet to try the ABS.

What do you think?

You need to plug a code reader in and see what codes you have to go with the lights.

You can get much cheaper ones than that. A lot of people use the Torque app on their mobile paired with a Bluetooth obd connector. You can get them on eBay for £5-20.

If the check engine light is on (little yellow engine icon), you should have trouble codes retrievable by an OBDII code reader. You can get a basic reader for not much money as mentioned above. If you get the codes, post them on here and someone will point you in the right direction.
