Default does variable valve timing make a difference in performance or milage?

My understanding is the XK8 got variable valve timing in 1999 but the hp and milage numbers didn't change. Is this just Jag ot bothering to update the numbers or is there really no appreciable difference?

Could have been to improve emissions.

XK8s (Not XKRs) always had Variable Valve Timing. 97 & 98 have 2 position VVT, 99 and up have Continuously Variable VVT.
