Sorry, High temp RTV silicone seal. The stuff you would use on the valve cover gasket at the head/front cover joint.

Hi Vinoengel, we tried doing that at our ECU lab here, but it doesn't work. The programming is different.

When we installed a different ECU (LNA1410BB for example) when the car had a LJA140AK, LJA140AH, LJA140AN, the car never started.

We then we desoldered the memory and read it and found that the datas weren't compatible.

I am a new, member with the same running rough problem. I have a 98 XK8 60K miles. I took it to a small shop that does Jags. The error code was P0205, injector problem. He also checked the plugs since they were original and changed them-no help. Then he changed the injector (5)-no help. I baught a used ECM (still with original warranty seals on it) with the exact letters and numbers from another shop. He installed and the car did not start. He then got the software from his programming system manufacturer (Autologic) and reprogrammed it. I now starts but still runs rough. Where do I go from here. Help.

I saw from another post of yours you recently had your upper tensioners replaced. If the mechanic did not prime the oil in them first by cranking the engine with the igntion or fuel injection relay disconnected, there is a very good likelihood one or both cams jumped a tooth. This would give you a very rough running engine.

And it sounds like he really isn't all that sharp, ie throwing parts at it just like a dealer.

Keep in mind that it is not a dealer specific behaviour.

It can happen anywhere. It can be prevented by good communications between an owner and a mechanic if both are sufficiently knowledgable.

Yes, that was not properly worded. But too often on this forum I have seen comments about indies and dealers too quick to swap parts at the owners expense. I think it comes from being in a hurry to do warranty repairs with an eye on the clock.

This is an extension to my last post.

The restricted performance message will sometime go away and the sequence will repeat itself.

Sorry about my confusing message. I composed an earlier on and it just disappeared into the bit-bucket.

When first started it runs smooth. I drive it a few blocks and it starts to run rough. Also, if I accelerate to high RPM is will also start to miss. In both cases the "Restricted performance" message comes on and then it will smooth out and the message will go away.

The tech is checking the wiring harness for damaged wires.

Any other suggestions?

Well, my 3 week troubleshooting ordeal is over. They found a bad solder joint in the control wire between the ECM and the number 5 injector. It failed intermittently due to vibration at idle and sometimes at higher rpms. Expensive to find--easy to repair.

That's a new one, so reporting back with is especially good as it will be helpful for others.

The wiring is getting any younger on these cars

If I may chime in. I just purchased a 1997 Jag XK-8 Coupe from FLA. It seems all the harness plugs going into the coils are very brittle and broken. Prior Mechanic apparently used RTV Silicone clear to make certain they stay connected. No check engine lights yet. But would sure welcome any suggestions for a fix. Do I have to do an ECM??? What a nightmare. Fla may have no rust but their Sun is also a killer. Thank-you to all who help. Be well!

This is a duplicate post to the one you made in the XK8 coil problem thread, and has little to do with the topic of this thread. Hopefully one of the overseers of the forum will eliminate it.

My old 97, I had the ECM rebuilt about 5 year ago now I think. The current owner of that car lives around me and time to time I talk to him, no mention of that ECM acting up. If it had he would tell me. He always asks me about this or that on the car. Just last week he came to my house to ask where I got the tires for the car as he needed the spare tire to be the same for car show sake. I was thinking, damn dude, write down what type of tire it is and GOOGLE IT.
