Default Engine cover R&R

After 7 years of owing my XK8 and doing most of the maintenance myself, I find I need help on a rather basic question. Is there an correct way of installing and removing the engine covers? I have broke off and reattached the tabs until I can no longer glue them on, so I went to Ebay and purchases a set of used ones in very good condition. However before I install them, I have to ask if anyone has a safe way of removing them. I am not one to just "yank" the things off, but I have broken the tabs off while being very aware of the problem. Should the air intake be removed so they can be lifted straight off? Should they be removed and installed as a set with the little rubber piece that connect the two halves installed? This may sound silly but I really do not want to here the hear that "SNAP" of the tabs breaking on the newly acquired covers.
