Default On the fence... '05-'07 XKR / '07 XK ?

Ok, As the title says I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for a good '05-'06 XKR, or an '07 XK/XKR.

If I find a very good condition car at a good value, that's the one I will get. (BTW...Is there a shorthand name, or chassis code for '96-'06 XK8/XKR?)

I WILL read through as many post here as I can and do my own homework. I'm familiar with a few important issues around the '07 XK/XKR. The TSB thread is just not reader friendly, and I'm not a mechanic.

Can an owner/expert here just give me a few keywords to search for, in regards to issues inherent to say... '05-'06 XKR? (i.e. Supercharger failure, water pump, etc...)

Just give me a hint and I'll do my own homework. Thanks

'96-'06 XK8/XKR is an x100
'07-'15 XK/XKR is an x150

Welcome. Things to look out for are from 96 to 02. Cam chain tensioners and water pump are the worst offenders. Look for service records.

I'll second Loxmth... timing chain (primary and secondary) tensioners are the number one thing to look out for on any 4.0L cars. Make sure they've been updated to the 3rd generation. If you have a 4.2L ('05+), it will have come with the 3rd gen tensioners from the factory.

Quick note on model years.. in the US the X100 runs 97-06, X150 from 07-15.. UK has '96 X100s and '06 X150s.

Good luck!

Don't worry about tensioners since your looking for a 05-06 These particular years are pretty much bullet proof. Most of the bugs were worked out by the end of the run.

Here is a nice detailed summary of the later X100 models by another forum member:

Thanks for all the info.
Question: I am used to NA 1-2 liter Japanese engines that will go 200-300k miles. I have never owed a big displacement v8, let alone supercharged. What is the lifespan of one of these before they show real problems. Do the superchargers last into the 100-200k mile range?

Also I'll tell you the reason I was "on the fence"
From a looks standpoint I find the x100 beautiful. However it seems as if the x150 is a better engineered drivers car. But I'm not as crazy about the looks of it.

My mechanic has a few customers with X308 XJRs with over 200k. However, that's obvisously a supercharged 4.0, not a 5.0.

I actually asked him about the longevity of the 5.0 in general, and he said it's too early to really tell. But from what he's seen so far he doesn't see any major red flags.

Well most likely I'll have the NA 4.2 l or the supercharged 4.2.

My 2005 XK8 (4.2) is about to hit 100k and no real issues yet beyond regular maintenance. I would think if 4.0s are lasting into the 200k range, a well taken care of 4.2 should as well. They're relatively bulletproof engines.

Agreed. These 4.2 engines are strong. If they're properly maintained, they should run for 200,000 miles or more. It's the plastics and electronics in these cars that eventually create most of the killer issues we have to deal with....
