I would imagine it just goes over, you can remove the top section. The entire door panel is vinyl, except for the top section of the door pull.

 

I keep looking at these caps, love the way they enhance the door. The price is absolutely outrageous though. I wonder if these caps could be duplicated using self adhesive veneer, and carefully applying it directly to the vinyl, then stain and varnish in place.
