Default Front brakes: still had some pad left

I kept looking at this wondering how much pad was left. Being not used to these I didn't really know what I was looking at. Pads still there or not?
Pad left or not?
Well, here's how they looked once out. About a business card thickness left.
Be careful...and now we know. Went drilled rotors
My brakes now pretty much feel the same, but they're not.
I got very lucky. Off to the next (thermo tower and water pump).

I'm surprised you couldn't hear the screech of metal on metal!

Typically new pads have a friction material thickness of 11 mm. I check mine twice a year and replace when they get down to 4 mm. Rears wear out faster than fronts - approximately 3 changes on the rear to 2 changes on the front.

Not a sound. Nothing different in feel. Nothing.
Thanks Graham...didn't know the backs wore quicker. I'm going to keep an eye on them.
Getting the rotors off was a "challenge".
Like enough for it's own thread.

You certainly got your money's worth out of both the pads and the rotors

Could have been worse...

Jeez thats thin. You'd never have left my garage with pads like that. Ever.
Not the worse I've ever seen though, had a young girl come in early one morning said the brakes were making a noise, could I have a quick look as she's on her way to work.
Her brother had been doing something to the car over the weekend, she said.
Guess what...........no pad in one side at all! He either hadn't put it in or hadn't put the retaining pins in.
She called her dad, he came down, he called the son, he came down, son got belted all the way home!
My grin couldn't get any wider.

Back on topic though, who does your maintenance?
If it's yourself, give yourself a clip round the ear
If it's an independant, sack him.

Ok, I'll ask the obvious question. Don't the front brakes do all the work? The front wheels are where all the brake dust accumulates. None to speak of on the rear.

No, the front/rear ratios in terms of applied force vary from design to design. Typical range is 60/40 to 72/25.

How quickly they wear depends also on specific design. It's not rare to see the rears wear faster than fronts as Graham was saying.

My fronts were gone also but weren't making noise. Rotors also replaced. Rears replaced but a lot left. When you get an old car you don't really know the history. I should have changed everything when I got it 3 years ago. But was working on tensioner for camshaft , radiator hoses, and belt, and little things

Those are the coolest slotted rotors I've ever seen. Where can I get those? 😁

Just ride your brakes at all times and never change your rotors. Sooner or later, you will have them....
