Default help

I recently installed a new battery on my 2002 Jaguar xk8 and forgot to take the terminal cap off:-( on the negative side.....Misteriously the car started and was running for two months before it would not start one day
after starting it by jumping it and took it to pep boys where I purchase the battery thinking its the battery.....It was realized that the cap was not taken out....so I took the cap off and reinstalled the battery....once I did that and try to start the engine.....the engine would start up but it would die after few seconds like there is no fuel getting to the engine.
after diagnostic done by a mechanic they said its the fuel pump that has to be replaced...... I have never had any issues w starting the car before I redid the cables and it does not make any sense to me.....please advice
