Default Intake elbow gasket

Good Morning,

I need help figuring out which way the intake elbow to supercharger gasket is supposed to be installed. Has anyone here replaced that gasket? I have a serious intake leak, and replaced that gasket, however it is still sucking air from the same location. The car is a 2000 XKR.

I appreciate all the help!

Jim

Jim,

Thanks for responding! It's the rectangular gasket that is installed between the intake elbow and the inlet side of the supercharger. Seems like the gasket is very minimalistically sealed, and there is sealing material for two of the bolt holes, but not the others so it seems it has to be installed a certain way. The old gasket was installed using silicone, and from what I have understood that shouldn't be needed. I have looked for another gasket to show you an example, but I'm not having any luck finding one. I have found what looks like to be an updated gasket on gaudin, but not sure if it would fit a 2000 xkr.

Not really. I had an XK and I've owned the XKR for almost 6 years and have over 125k miles on the R. I use it as a daily driver, and some things just need to be replaced at a certain time/mileage, and that's what it seems I have run into.

Ok - try this one! There are two gaskets on the elbow and there doesn't seem to be anything special regarding installation. I'm not sure what the problem is because they should just seal. Are the faces warped? Put the face on a sheet of glass (or a mirror) and see if you can slide strips of paper under the faces. If you can either grind flat with valve compound, machine it flat, or file it.

Jim,

Yes #4. I found a picture of the actual part here. GASKET, INLET SIDE - Terrys Jaguar Parts - NCC7754BA

Is this correct? Do you see the bolt holes that have rubber gasket material? In which position does they get installed? This gasket just seems very minimalistic for the amount of sealing surface that needs to be covered, or are two additional rubber flat gaskets supposed to be on either side?

Thanks for the help!
Jim

You said two gaskets on the elbow? My car had only one gasket installed, what does the other gasket look like?

It goes on the face immediately under the ~3 on the picture (throttle body gasket?)

I'm really not sure what you mean by holes with rubber in. What holes? Has someone tried to bodge the seal by squirting sealant in it? If the faces are flat even a paper gasket will seal it. By the way - the thicker the gasket the more it will leak because the body will bow as you tighten the bolts up and crush the gasket. Check the face(s) for flatness.

If you take a look at the link I posted, it shows the gasket that is used between the intake elbow and the supercharger and two of the holes where the bolts run through have what appears to be gasket material and the others on that gasket do not. As for the oring under 3, yes I have replaced that.

That gasket does look a bit odd. I have never fitted one so can't help. The Manual doesn't say anything about orientation at all - it just says refit new gasket. Even the Manual diagrams don't show any specific details on the gasket to help - so from that I would assume that it doesn't matter. All it does say is to tighten the bolts to 18 - 24 Nm.

In the link photo there is what appears to be a 'tab' or mark on the top center it's hard to tell from the pic, this should provide a good orientation point, did you notice on the old one if it existed and which way it was placed? Always the case to carefully visual removement of parts to make re-installation easier ? A camera is your best friend, esp for me whose memory can be intermittent.

I would make mentioned gasket using PTFE gasket sheet (or diferent material). Cheap, DIY and bulletproof.

Anyway, stock gasket is made of thin steel.

The old gasket did not have the tab, and was installed using silicone. I was told that silicone should not be used installing this gasket, but after having this car torn apart twice, and soon to be a third time, I'm thinking something has to be done. I believe the tab on the gasket is installed in the up position. I did find what appears to be a gasket for a 2003 and I'm wondering if this would fit. It states it's for 4.0 supercharged engines.
GASKET, INLET ELBOW - Terrys Jaguar Parts - AJ83292

What do you guys think? Does anyone have any knowledge of an upgraded gasket for the 4.0 supercharged engines?

If a properly installed gasket won't seal, it's not the gasket - it's the joint. I think someone has done the bolts up far too tightly and 'curled' the mounting lugs on the elbow. Take the elbow off, place a sheet of 600 grit wet & dry on a mirror, a cup of water, and grind the face flat. Then use any gasket you like!

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it! As soon as the weather warms up I'll pull it all apart again and see what's going on.

I looked at the SNG Barratt catalog for they have some diagrams of assembly, the 4.0 and 4.2 (which is the part# above) are very different and will not work. It's on page 32 of my catalog, you might call them to discuss you issue they may have a answer. They are very good with helping forum members here.

So I removed the elbow, pplaced it on a mirror and found out I needed to clean it up bit, as I could slide some paper under the elbow in one spot. So, I installed the new gasket put it all back together and got the same damn result. So I took it to the local jaguar dealer, and told them what was going on. They performed a smoke ck, and said that it is the elbow leaking, and that more than likely it is an OLD style gasket, and that the old style gaskets cause leaks and that there is a new style gasket made of a different material that they are going to order. So they are going to order the gasket, and Im going to install it. I'm interested to see if it's similar to the 2003My gasket. I'm also pissed off that the old gaskets that cause problems are still being sold. Wtf?

So I finally was able to pick my car up from the dealer with the parts they supplied. Turns out what they said was bad was not the gasket between the intake elbow and supercharger, but the two left and right oval seals that are installed between the supercharger and intake. I was skeptical about (those seals should be new from the head gasket replacement less then a year ago) replacing them, however during the removal I discovered that the right seal was torn, and the seals looked to be in bad shape. I installed the new seals started her up, and she ran PERFECT. The car idles perfectly now. R/R of the seals took about one hour.
