Default Intermediate exhaust question xk8 vs xkr

Hello folks and thanks in advance for taking a moment to read this post.
Ok, I'm looking to replace my large middle exhaust box on my 1996 xk8. I am wondering if I would be able to fit a middle box from a 4.2 xkr? 2002 to 2006. See picture of xkr middle box below.
I know that the xkr is a flange fit but I'm thinking that I could simply cut off the flanges and fit directly the the catalyitc convertors as mine are a slot fit. Has anyone tried this or does anyone know if the bore size is different between the xk8 and xkr pipes?
From appearances it looks like the only difference are the flanges but I don't know. Also, are there any internal differences that would hinder the xk8 if fitted with an xkr middle box? Cheers.

This doesn't really answer your question at all, but you could just stick an x-pipe in there. I did that with mine and it's still reasonably quiet unless I really get on it (and no highway drone).
