Default Intermittent Auto Headlight Problem

Of late, my headlights will occasionally switch off while in the auto-on position, even though it is dark. Last night this happened, and for the heck of it, I tapped the back the mirror and the lights came back on. As I continued tapping the mirror, the lights went on and off. I don't know much about the mirror, so I'd welcome any opinions on what is going on.
Thanks!

Mine had a broken solder joint at the indicator stalk where a little wire attaches. Try jiggling the stalk when the problem occurs. I found a thread on here about the fix for this. It was fiddly, but can be done under the dash.

Thanks, Jim. The lights stay on fine when they are manually switched on. It's when I have them in auto-on position that they sometimes go out.

It sounds like the connector/harness from the Auto Lamps Sensor in the Mirror to the BPM (Body Processor Module).

I had the same problem as Jimmy, though this one sounds like a bad connection up at the mirror. As stated earlier if it is in the stalk, wiggling it around will produce the problem. Don't forget you can cover the light sensor at the back of the mirror with a piece of opaque tape. This forces the lights on at all ignition on times - will make it easier to trouble shoot.

I don't have a schematic in front of me but doesn't the mirror's dim function (button pressed in mirror dims) only work when headlights are on and not in reverse? I mention this because it may help you track down the problem point in the wiring.

If it by chance turns out to be the turn signal stalk, let us know. I just fixed the open wire for this same thing down there.

Mine started this flickering off while on AUTO about 6 weeks ago. It would not come on at all or would then flicker off soon after. I have wiggled my stalk (excuse me, ha ha) and that has not duplicated this issue. I assume it is up in the mirror setup that I have not messed with at this point.

This must be a common problem I've been trying off and on for over 2 years to get my auto lights to work. I took the steering wheel and indicator stalk off but couldn't see any broken wires. I guess the mirror wiring is my next port of call.
