Default Jaguar totaled

Well my Jaguar is a total loss. Last week I was driving to work and hit something. It was a steel plate used to cover a hole in the street. The problem was they had welded a 6x6x6 inch box section onto one side so it would plug the hole in the street and not move around.

The plate was not quite flat and the car ahead of mine bounced it out of the hole and it came to rest at angle and I hit it. Damages over $10K as the major subframe beam got pushed and torqued. Also the impact destroyed the transmission mount.

I don't think we will be getting another in the near future so I may not be posting much anymore.

I've had it for three years. What is the expected depreciation for a car with 102k miles? thanks

No injury to anyone. And the car still ran great. Insurance will cover loss.

Hope you're OK and the insurance takes care of the loss.

What kind of brain thought that was a sensible way to make a temporary street repair!

Unbelievable! In my industry, contractors have vehicle insurance that covers accidents like this. If the city did the 'repair they have insurance too.

Why no more jags? Moving on? Doesn't fit your family or personal vehicle needs? Maintenance costs?

I need to get my daughter through her last year MBA and we had 4 cars between the two of us. Three will work until next year when my daughter is on her own. We may look at a 2003 white XKR then.

The construction company has accepted blame. They will end up paying for it all.

Steve I'm sorry. I lost mine last summer, damage was much like yours, brings back some bad memories.

Mine was a 2000 XK8 coupe with 118k, my insurance company used NADA and gave me 12k for the loss. I can tell you that the next XK you get will be a very special car to you.

That is too bad Steve, its one thing to write if off through your own fault but through someone else’s stupidity is a totally different feeling.

I know, I've done both, thankfully not with the Jag, touch wood. Hope to see you back with a new X100 model soon.

Regards,

Karl

That's unprofessional and haphazard street repair. I wonder if those clowns would do the same thing on a runway or taxiway.

Sorry for your loss, Steve. I think the city or contractor is required to have its insurance cover it though. But, hey....I'm looking for new wheels and tires: Are you thinking of parting it out??

Sorry about that . . . .

My total experience resulted in a one month period without an XK8 and then a substantially better one.

Glad there was no injuries.

(post # 3000) been here too long.

OJL- I would have had to buy the car back from my insurance company at salvage value after they settled my total loss claim. They wanted about 3k for it, so I passed.

I have been in the busness of road repairs and locating utilities for 30 yrs., and I have never seen such a **** poor locate plate in my life. There should be a state program for locating. We call it PUPS in SC. What I see is a telocomunications local, square cut hole and a vac systems (water and vac truck trenchless tech). Which is designed to minimize or reduce digging in the road to find utilities. The orange paint is spicific to telecomunications. (water is blue. sewer is green, gas is yellow etc). I would defiently contact my local phone company/local govement inity. The minium plating that is used with in my department is 3/4"X 4 X 8 foot plate. Somebody needs to address this before someone is injuried. Seeing something like this scares the living hell out of me!!!! I thank God that you are ok!! Jim

Seems they should have to buy you a replacement car or at least give you something for pain and suffering. I'm sure it'ss pain to loose your Jag and you're suffering as a result.

The contractor will pay my insurance company through subrogation, not the local government. The city guy came out to take pictures and to confirm what happened. The contractor accepted responsibility.

I will contact the city and suggest that this could have killed a motorcyclist and perhaps this contractor should not be awarded future contracts.

I'm suffering just reading about it, aren't you? Maybe we should file class-action? ;-)

Sorry to read about your bad luck--karma will see to it that things end out for the best.

This is the double-edged sword about keeping a car for a number of years. It is worth a bundle to the owner and the real value is the fact that you do not need to fork out a bunch for a new car. But when a car gets old enough and is in an accident or something, you can't get diddly for it and are thus faced with having to buy something you didn't need.
