Default A lament....

I have a front wheel bearing that's been singing and getting louder, so I ordered both front wheel bearings and turned the car in yesterday at a local shop that is used for fleet service by the company I work for here on Maui.

They called within the hour and said they couldn't do the job because they didn't have the tool to remove the ABS ring. So I called around and found a shop close by that specializes in European cars, and I asked them if they had the tool. The reply was "yes, yes, we have the tool".

So I dropped the car off this morning. They said they would have it ready by noon. I just went to check on it. The DUMB S*B TOOK A STEEL CHISEL TO THE MAGNETS ON THE ABS RING AND DESTROYED 3 OF THEM - THAT WAS HIS TOOL!!!!

Worse yet, he believes he will be able to "file down the magnets and it will be fine." He's now waiting for the correct tool to be delivered by the Snap-on Tool man. And I have no confidence that Snap-on has the right tool either.

I get the sneaking suspicion that not only will I not get my car back today, I'm going to be in a fight with these yo-yo's about making the damage right.

Such is life on a small island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Even when you ask the right questions - you can't rely on getting a correct answer.

Actually, I think that the ABS Ring is not Magnetic. The Sensor is probably a Hall Effect Device which senses Ferrous Metal. Of course, there would have be enough metal remaining on each "Tooth" for the Sensor to read.

The exciter ring is not magnetic. They are fairly cheap and easy to get. Don't use a damaged one or you will likely have more problems.

Next time find an actual indy Jag mechanic?

I know mine actually save me money... they can do the job right and they can do it quickly. Less billable hours > more hours at cheaper prices + not being setup to do the job quickly or right. They also have used part connections that can save you a bundle. Also, the Jag mechanics I've met are usually budget concisous themselves as well as being Jag enthusiasts that actually like working on the cars, whereas most non-specific mechanics are wrenching only because they get paid to.

The assumption is that there is a Jag mechanic on Maui - there's not one. The closest thing to it is a shop that does warranty work for Mercedes, Porche and BMW. This would be the same shop that charged me $1,800 to change out the radiator and heater hoses and steam clean the radiator - and to add injury to that insult - also stole items worth another $80 from my trunk in the process. Oh yeah, I want to take the car back to them.

The good news is that the shop that did the damage is at least being stand-up about it. They ordered the replacement ABS rings and the correct tool and advised me they expect everything this week and will call me when it all arrives. They also agreed to hold the price they originally quoted for the job. So I'm in the attitude of "s*it happens", and it's not whether you have a problem, but how you handle the problem. And this shop appears to be trying to do the right thing. If they do, then I'll keep using them. Because it's not like there are Jag mechanics standing on the street corner with signs saying "will repair your Jag for food" on this island.

Happy holidays to you all

Are you able to provide them with some details from JTIS so they know what they're in for? My indie has his software that is similar, so we go over parts and procedures before he operates. It costs out the job in hours as well, so we know where we stand. Sounds like they're in the dark about this replacement; at a minimum the torque values should not be guesswork. Good luck!

I should have said the exciter ring is not magnetized, not that it is not magnetic. Mea culpa.
