Default Limp mode

Hello to all!

On 2 separate occasions occasions yesterday and once today, my 1997 XK8 vert. went into limp mode suddenly, once while driving and twice while stopped. When stopped, the RPMs rose to 1500-2000 and then dropped after a second. Only once did it register codes. They are as follows:

P0123
P0223
P1227
P1229

These indicate pedal/throttle position senor and a mechanical guard sensor.

On all occasions, after shutting the car off for approx. one minute and restarting, all was well. When it happened while stopped, I could feel the accelerator depress slightly as the RPMs rose.

Can someone point me in the right direction as to where I need to start to correct this problem. Where is the pedal position sensor? A picture would be awesome! I'm also assuming the the pedal and mechanical guard sensors are related. As you can see by my tagname, I am not a mechanic but can follow instructions well.

Thanks to all for your advise and input. I eagerly await your responses.

Nick

It looks like the throttle body needs to be rebuilt. Many members have reported favorably after using ASI. Link:

Default Throttle body may be heading south

[QUOTE=Spinedoc2304;1688204]Hello to all!

P1229 indicates problem with the throttle motor control circuit.

Throttle motor disconnected

Throttle motor to ECM drive circuits; short circuit or open circuit

Throttle motor failure

P0223 is a problem with the throttle position sensor with the following descriptions:

TP sensor to ECM sensing circuit 2 (TP sensor pin 2) short circuit to battery voltage
TP sensor failure

Morning Folks

As an update.
I searched the forum and found a post with the same problem. They recommended that all the contacts to the throttle body and throttle position sensor be cleaned with contact cleaner and dielectric grease globbed into them.

Did it and haven't had a problem since (about 2 weeks now). Gosh, I hope I haven't jinxed myself...

Always pays to start with the simple stuff before progressing to the complex.
We should all type the following on our foreheads, in reverse, so we see it in the mirror every morning . . .
  • standing battery voltage - ie >12.6V, measured first thing in morning;
  • battery and ground connections - check for looseness and corrosion;
  • fuses and connectors - check, clean any corrosion, re-insert fully.
Mind you, many folk are gunna comment on your messy forehead. LOL.
Great to hear you appear to have resolved issue.
Happy Jaguar motoring,
Cheers,

Ken
