Default Looking at a 1998

First off, it is PURPLE.

Rearview mirror is black, cannot see anything and is this an item that can be bought from someone or do I need to search ebay?

Getting a error message - Stability Control Fail, anybody got an idea of what might be causing this problem?

Both front seats need to be replaced, the cloth on the lower part of the backrest is tearing. How much does new leather cost and best place to buy?

Also, they are asking $11,900 with 107k miles. Which is what they seem to be going for around Birmingham, Al.

Any other things I should check on this car?

Paint is in real good shape and everything seems to work, though there is a lag when I press the pedal to the floor, but the 01 that I drove did that too.

The mirror can be replaced for $99.00 exchange, see the sticky's above, E-bay will have the leather for the seats. look up previous posts. But $11,900 is too much for this car with this many problems and mileage. Between $6000.00 to $8000.00 depending on other maintenance items that need to be addressed. For $11,900.00 everything should have been addressed, and the car should be in good working order.

He is probably looking at an XKR, thus the hesitation when first press the gas pedal hard, and probably explains the high price.

it's too much money, even for an XKR.

mirror, seats, and stability control/ABS can cost you anywhere from $500 - $5000 depending on what is broken (ABS repairs are costly).

And you still have a purple car, new paint is another $4k??

Plenty of nice looking XKs on ebay for 12k. Newer, less mileage, and in colors that don't hurt...

It is an XK8 and the cloth is on the bottom part of the backrest, right by the hinges.

I was thinking $11.9k was high, but everywhere I look, I see $10.5k on up.

I figured there couldn't be too many purple ones.
Pity there are not more pics.

I'm with the others, I think for that money you could do better.

Not that much. Asking price is not the trade price. With issues that car should be well below $10k. And you need to understand and know the situation regarding cam chain tensioners, throttle body replacement and water pump replacement and about a hundred other things. See the FAQ sticky above. Thirteen year old cars like these with over 100k miles should only be owned by hobby mechanics.

. . . and welcome to the forum!

I agree with test point, I am tinkering on her, as I have found the previous uhm "mechanics" did shabby work. However, I actually enjoy working on it. Say, test point, I notice we are sorta twins, my Jag is blue, and so is my 2005 gl1800, couldnt help but see it in the background of your pic there.

I got my 2003 XK8 last April with 72,000 on the clock and I only paid $13K.

Randy, in my opinion you should run, run away!!! If they are asking $12K right now, there's no way they are going to negotiate down to a reasonable price. A knowledgeable buyer isn't going to pay more than $9K for that car, even if it was a color that was desirable. Throw in the purple paint and now it's worth about $6K.

Unless, of course, you like to see people pointing at you and snickering. If that's the case, then buy the purple car.

Just finished restoring a 73 Rallye Charger and am now restoring a 70 Ply Cuda and have been wrenching since I was 8 (dad made me). I know a lot about cars and I know how to bargain ( sold new cars for 2 yrs) and I have read all the stickies and researched the cars on the internet. Check my previous posts, been asking questions and am only looking for help, not for people to make my decisions for me. Thanks for the insight, but this will only be a DD for a short time and then it will become a just a play toy.

Thanks for the welcome.

Hey Rev, that is a good deal, I searched for only a few days as we were in need of another car, and this was actually the best deal we found that was relatively close to us. Plus, by watching all your videos (which have helped by the way) I see why the low price ha ha ha, just kidding. Say, dont mean to hi jack thread, but quick ? did that door latch fix the window memory thing, if so I need to do it, as mine forgets sometimes.

Savedbyhim,

My first XK8 was black/black to match the GoldWing, my 4th black Wing, a '77, an '87, a '95 and the '01. Unfortunately, it died at an intersection. Fortunately, there was no road rash involved.

As an aside note; I just, yesterday, got back from a court appearance regarding that little incident. After a low-ball proposed settlement, and two and a half years in litigation the Allstate attorney stated to the judge that he had not received the interrogatories from my attorney some 2 years ago. My attorney stated that they had been sent. The judge told the attorneys to work it out and that she would put it on next years calendar.

I am reminded of a quote attributed to John Adams:

"In my many years I have come to a conclusion that one useless man is a shame, two is a law firm, and three or more is a congress."

I agree with all three.

Hey Test Point
WOW, glad you are ok, sorry about your wing though, what a shame, and to be held in litigation this long over a traffic incident? WOW. hope things work out for you though. I sure would miss my wing.
