Loss of power and engine stall
I've had my XK8 for a few weeks now, I took it out this weekend for a 200 mile round trip which involved some fast motorway work. Traffic was diabolical for the early part of the journey with a great deal of stop start work on a very hot day. In the evening, we'd cooled off considerably and the traffic was moderate, after a 40 mile stint at 70mph, I pulled out to overtake a slow vehicle and kicked down to hustle on. She kicked down quite fiercely, but sped up rapidly and completed the manoeuvre. I slowed back down to around 70 and the car suddenly felt like it was braking, I pushed the accelerator but she didn't respond so I coasted to the hard shoulder thinking the engine was seizing. As I put her into park, the engine stall light came on so I restarted the motor which fired straight up normally, oil pressure and engine temp normal, put her back into drive and she pulled away without a hiccup. I had a further 80 miles to home and she drove impeccably with no noticeable power or gear change issues. I didn't risk kick down again but the gear changes seemed well timed and smooth. Can anyone throw any light on what may have occurred? My car is a 1998 model, the engine has done 113k miles and the gearbox was replaced at 100k with a 44k mile box (allegedly) I had filled up with petrol shortly before setting off on the return journey and had overfilled resulting in a lot of bubbling and overspill, but I'd released the cap twice to make sure it wasn't vapour locking.
