The above link goes to a great description of how to replace the rear brake pads & rotors on the xk8 and XJ.
I'd like to make a suggestion: Believe it or not the outside rear pads fit in backwards (wrong side up) as easily as they fit in proper position. (you can imagine how I know, no damage done but pain in the neck to re position). I had my mind on other things, it can happen more easily than you'd think.
May I suggest you add a caution note to this effect? Despite how preoccupied one is with other things, coming across a note in the instructions will likely help folks down the road.

When removing brake pads on any vehicle, I have learned to immediately set the old pads down on my driveway next to the wheel they came off of in the exact orientation they were in prior to me removing them from the calipers. That simple act has saved my butt on a couple of occasions when I was doing a brake job for the first time on that particular vehicle....

...... except me in February 2004. Noticed it as I took the photo.

Graham, you made me laugh. I was reluctant to post this, how can anyone be as dumb as me I thought. But what the heck maybe it'll help some one.
You just about had me at your first line, however true it was!
Thanks, John
