Just out of interest, don't you have regular vehicle testing, such as our annual MOT test here in the UK required for all vehicles 3 years or older - not needed, though, if the vehicle is off the road? Our tests record mileage on each occasion - and that information is held centrally, as well as on the test certificate. Could solve a lot of queries.
How can the 7,000+ miles on the odometer be verified, assuming its been a California car since 2001? 7,000+ miles on a 16-year old car smells very fishy to me ...

Odometer rollback is one of the things Carfax checks for. You could probably google up how they do this but it involves checking against mileage recorded during vehicle inspections & repairs.
Why can't 7k be right? But it is a basket looking for a case I think though as we all know what sitting does to them. If this car is bought and put into regular use, they will have issues, WP goes out, hose leaks, Tstat goes out, Convt top hose leaks, the list could be endless!

Agree with all of this. But there is a question to be answered, in my view. this car has hardly even done any delivery mileage!

Its on a state by state basis but most states have annual safety inspections and emissions inspections every 2 years that are required for registration.
Im not sure what MOT consists of but these checks generally record mileage, vin, make sure all lights work, brakes and tires are within tolerance, and that all safety systems are operational (seatbelt, no cracks in windshield, etc...). Not that tasking.
I have a 2001 XKR Silverstone coupe with 8,600 miles. Only problems I have had was fuel pumps, and valve cover gaskets leaking every few years or so. I'm the second owner.
I couple things regarding this:
- Here in California the "inspection" is limited to a smog check (and mileage) every 2 years. Wheels falling off-OK, no lights-OK, broken windscreen-OK; just don't pollute.
- The history can be found on CARFAX, which the listing says is available for free. But it's going to cost $40 USD to see it. The report summary does indicate 17 records, these will be for registrations, maintenance/major repair events.
- This type of dealer is quite prevalent, they have no idea about this car, what is real or unreal. One clue is when they refer to "2nd Chance Financing" they are normally selling marginal cars to marginal buyers. I'd make a bet they are looking at the trip odometer reading not the total mileage. And they don't know any better.
Based on the seats, I would estimate 80K-100K miles.
If I lived closer I'd scope it out on a lark, but it's a couple hours away, can't justify it based on the entertainment value alone.
