Unhappy Massive oil leak on engine start, mostly stops when not running

Oh no. I drove my 2007 XKR (~136000 miles) five days ago (which I bought in early April and indicated no signs of oil leakage, and I have driven it at least six times since I bought it) and it was pointed out to me that there was a small amount of oil left in the garage (picture attached is of that oil). I was concerned about this, and I didn't drive the car between then and now, but I did check the oil. There was no noticeable change in the dipstick and *almost* no extra oil was on the ground.

I start it up today, and I smell more oil than normal (car is an oil burner). I check under the car, only to discover a massive pool of oil dripping from seemingly numerous locations. I quickly shut it off and the leak seemed to subside almost completely, with only residual oil coming out.

So essentially, there is a huge amount of oil that pours out of the car, on a problem that presented itself barely noticeably on Friday, and developed without the car having been driven in the intervening days, and has now become a huge one. I have no idea how to attack this. Any thoughts to what could be causing this?

I have attached videos of the outpouring of oil.

To add, most of the oil seems to have pooled into the area directly behind the back of the front wheels, near the front of the passenger compartment.

If you still have the front undertray (belly pan) installed, that moves all drips and leaks somewhere other than it actually is. That tray has padding which can absorb a lot of fluid. Where it lands on the ground has little to do with where the leak comes from.
If you have a gusher, the leak is probably on a pressurized portion of the oiling system, so like the filter or maybe the oil cooler (I don't know where that is on a 4.2).
First thing I'd do is check for that belly pan and remove it, then probably hose off the entire underside best I could with hot water.

You need to get underneath, remove the under engine shield, and look around. Lots of possibilities for leakage source, but you need to look to narrow it down.

Argh, phone locked up on this website while posting my reply. Wasn’t trying to copy Cee Jay.

Wait, you guys’ under engine shield has padding??

Also watched a video where a guy removed his engine cover and it had padding too.

I have neither.

You are SO screwed. You best unload that fickle beast soon as possible. I'll give you a grand for it and take on the debacle for myself.

Sorry that I didn’t update the thread, life-altering events were underway for me basically right after this nasty problem started.

I opted to take it into a shop since I haven’t the time to work on it myself right now, and I was able to drive it there without any oil leakage whatsoever. It still smelled of oil the whole way (a short 2 minute drive). How bizarre! I will update when I get a diagnosis.

Not sure how relevant but happened when I purchased my x100 and drove from the showroom in Houston to LA. The air filter housing completely filled with oil! I think I recall was a blocked pcv and everything was fine after it was replaced.

I just heard back from the shop, and the news is grim.

I was quoted $8000 to replace the timing chain gasket and cover, the oil pan and gasket, both valve covers and their gaskets, the crankshaft seal, and rebuild essentially the entire cooling system.

There doesn't seem to be wrong with either the supercharger or the cooling system, (coolant was flushed 5000 miles ago) but the mechanic stated to me that the hoses that needed to come off on these components in order to access the gaskets would break during the repair and would need to be replaced. Unfortunately, I just can't afford that repair right now.

No visible oil leak occurred on the short drive back, and I didn't really smell any oil. However, the check engine light came on, but the car didn't go into limp mode. When other shops open back up on Monday, I will try to get second and third opinions, especially one from the local specialist shop. If the news is similar from those places, I will probably try to part it out or offload it to a junker since I can't in good conscience pass it on.

I suppose I only have myself to blame for this.

All of those things are leaking? Or are they padding their bank account?

I’m with KJ on this one.

”we need to replace everything we touch” is either CYA or just bilking under the guise of precautionary.
Lots of jag shops also over inflate their estimates because they don’t want to touch a jag.

Wait to see what the local specialist says.
Don't tell them you’ve even taken it to anyone else.
Could they be right? Sure.
But they could also be way over killing an issue that needs 1-3 things done for a couple grand.

Strange, one day it is pouring out the next drive it isn't and oil level is ok?
More specific information is needed but...you bought it one month ago so here is a scenario that I hope is not the situation.
Dealers have been known to 'fix' oil leaks with a product, Blue Devil. It swells seals & gaskets and can stop leaks, if too much is added it will in a short time start to turn these seals etc into jelly. When that occurs oil leaks everywhere. I hope this is not what happened to your car.

Yes, it dripped a small amount one time and then the next time I started it, it poured oil. Before and since, no oil has come out and driving it back from the shop it didn't even smell of oil at all. It is for sure not coolant. Perhaps the check engine light that is being thrown all of a sudden will be able to tell me something, I'll pull the code in a bit.

I don't think all of those are leaking, but they were not eager to share. I hope that they're just trying to pad their wallets, because if all of those issues are really occurring, I would be in a serious pickle, to say the least.

I don’t think this could be the cause of a massive leak but a lot of shops just assume and use synthetic oil on our cars on the service which apparently causes gasket leaks on non synthetic cars.

Has the leak stopped as it's lost all its oil now ?
