2002 XK8 up on lift for about two weeks for suspension work. Opened passenger door and noticed window didn't do convertible down. Battery totally dead. Jumped and all kind of error messages and instrument abnomalies. Took battery into Wal-Mart, wouldn't charge (said showing 6 amps), so got a new one under warranty. Put in and started. Errors and abnomalies continued.
First pic below is key out with lights off. If I turn lights on and off, goes away. Second pic below is key out. MOV 2504 below is engine off. MOV 2506 is engine running.
Error messages: incorrect part fitted, handbrake on, low brake fluid, ASC not available, gearbox fault, high gearbox temperature, fail safe engine mode (the boot and bonnet are actually open).
Codes:
P1638, CAN link ECM/instrument panel
B1202, fuel sender circuit open
B2143, non volatile memory failure
U1135, ignition status not obtained
U1041, vehicle speed not obtained
B24BD, diagnostic trouble code invalid
B1595, ignitin switch - illegal input code
On suggestion of a forum member, I disconected ABS - no change.
Hard reset did nothing.
Fastest Jag ever - 50 miles in 3 seconds equals 60,000 mph

Easy to take cluser out and get access to the circuit board .If you look on youtube you will find reference to one ring type joint on the board that goes bad ..use a 15w iron
if it has gear indication and shifts it’s 99.9% gonna be a bad cluster. i’ve never taken them apart i’m sure you’ll find a bad joint or two
Has gear indication. Key on position, runs through gears. When running, will not leave park.
Sometimes on shut off, oil pressure and voltmeter lights stay on, sometimes go off. See pics below.
It’s put on 30,000 miles while I was checking codes and trying to figure it out. Anyway to change back.
It does look very much like your jump start fried your major instrument cluster unfortunately (the minor gauges are driven by the main cluster). The driver's handbook has instructions for jump starting including warning not to have the engine of the other vehicle running when you disconnect the cables - you would think the electronics would be better protected, but there you go.
Am I correct the mileage is stored in the instrument panel and same year (or close) can be switched out? Are XK8 and XJ8 the same?
Yes mileage is in the instrument panel. As ever you need to match the VCATS numbers and yes XJ8s have the same cluster. I don't know if a "near enough" cluster would work, but it can't be any worse by the look of it.
You cannot just swop a cluster as the ECU knows the serial number .
The OP needs to clarify if they have the 4.0 or the 4.2 version of the car. The 4.0 is a straight swap. I don't know if the 4.2 needs the VID block programming?
There's a few different part numbers, and some crossover with the XJ8. I imagine a 2002 US car will be the 4.0L, in which case the EPC shows part # LJE4300AB: the VCATS will confirm.

OP - what are the last 6 characters of your VIN?
4.0 VCATS sticker below.
Just ordered LJE4300AB off a 2002 XJ8 on eBay.
Didn’t wait to pull my instrument pack to inspect because high rated seller and $30 shipped. Most others were $100+. Also fried pack from jump seems most likely.
I understand the number after the “/“ (108 in my case) is the program revision. Is this an issue if don’t match? I’ve sold several modules from my swap project and they all had “XXX” after the part number.
My 2001 XKR Convertible a few months older than yours has LJE4300AB/105. Because that last XXX is programmable, it usually isn't shown on the module itself. It's impossible to know what the different revisions do unfortunately because as far as I know it isn't documented anywhere (other than possibly in an old filing cabinet somewhere). For $30 though it's an absolute no brainer to try it.
Good point. Yes, mine does have "Supercharged" on the rev counter and has the D rather than an A on the VCATS LJE4300DB/105. That must be the Supercharged vs NA difference.
