Found it sitting on top of the wheel well in the engine bay!

Looks like a thermostat seal.

Have you replaced your water pump recently? The O ring looks similar to the one on the water pump which I replaced on our 2004 VDP with 4.2 engine.

Have not replaced anything as I just got her :-) I'll have a look at most recent receipts.
