Default New cat in the stable

Ok, I wrote a really long post and deleted it on accident.

So here is the tl;dr

Sold silver 01 coupe, too hard to get in in and out
Found another blk/blk coupe 2003, couldn't pass up (black xk8, amirite?)

fixed trans leaks (pan,sleeve)

Makes short knocking and then tapping sound when first started cold, goes away when warm.

VVT? Oil filter with no backflow valve? looking for ideas and places to start replacing stuff. Thanks in advance!

Congrats Dude. I hate it when that happens (losing stuff on the computer). I might suspect the VVTs for the noise. My XJ8 had a slight clack clack when starting from cold that went away when it warmed a little. I believe it was just the VVTs getting pumped up or getting the oil moving. BTW, couldn't resist - is the black one a vert ? I have a little trouble getting into my vert, I guess a coupe would be a little more difficult.

I would also guess that you are just hearing the typical VVT start-up. Keep us posted....

It's a coupe- I keep falling for how great they look. All my friends absolutely DIG the coupe, wife hates it. I only drive the convertibile on sunny days, so I don't have to duck to get in it.

Mine does that soft tap as well on cold start up in the AM...goes away within a minute or when I press the pedal for a nice rev.

It started when I first got the coupe in mid-Jan and changed the oil from dino to synthetic...

do you use synthetic? I currently have Mobil 1, but will try Castrol Edge Professional on the next change...

I'd eliminate the low cost and simplest option first - the possibility that the oil filter hasn't a non-return valve.

Whatever the cause of the knocking and tapping, it's going to be causing excessive wear on each startup.
