Default New codes help!

Just came back from ride in which the car threw two codes: Coolant temp. sensor and unsufficent temperature. Outside temp. is about 38 degrees F.

Shut it off.....left it sit approx. 1 min. or so and fired it back up. Ran fine but with check engine light.

After attaching OBD 2 reader , I read above codes and erased all.

What is the fix for this? Bad thermostat or sensor? If so , where are they located?

Did you get the actual Pxxxx numbers? Interpretations given by the code reader may not be accurate across brands, models and years.

Thanks for the replies.....being a newbie , I did not realize that the numbers where of value; therefore I did not note them.

I can say that the car was running much cooler than it usually does. It normally runs at about the 1/2 way mark ....today, it was at about the 1/4 mark on the gauge. I thought that it was unusual but seemed to to getting heat into car OK.

By this time any other year, i have winterised the car and brought out the 4 x 4 to use. The Jag is my fair weather toy!

Think maybe thermostat ? Sensor? Or should i try to drive again and get codes back?

If after running at idle for 10 minutes you are not at the 1/2 way mark on the gauge your thermostat is likely stuck open. It is more likely to fail than the temperature sensor, and you still may get some heat in the car (though not as much).

Next time you have an issue with codes, post the actual code and not a description of the code. They may seem like a nuisance when all you want to do is to get the MIL turned off but they are very informative.

Reason for posting the code and not a description is many of the OnLine code lookups don't provide the correct description for Jaguar codes.

Hope it turns out to be a stuck open Thermostat. A lot less hazardous than one getting stuck closed which can overheat the engine very quickly and cause serious damage!

Follow the link at the bottom of WhiteXKR's post to his RealGauge. Some really good information there on temperature gauges.

Another possibility is that if the "Winterizing" included a Coolant Change, the new Coolant level may not be sufficient to Bathe the Coolant Sensor.

With the engine COLD check the level in the Coolant Reservoir.

Of course, the Coolant Level Sensor should indicate a low level condition if that's the case.

Actually, a Coolant Temp Sensor Trouble Code would indicate that the Sensor itself was shorted or open circuit, indicating a bad Sensor or a poor connection.

Where is the sensor located? Maybe I should just replace it or/and clean the terminals.

I will try to let the car idle for 10 min. today to see what happens and write back.

Thanks for the help....much appreciated.

Here's the location of the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor:

Not got a reputation for failing.

Right, I don't remember ever seeing a report of a bad Coolant Temp Sensor.

Also, checking the (MY 2000) DTC list, there is no Trouble Code assigned specifically to a Coolant Temp Sensor malfunction.

Just started the Jag with the engine cold from overnight (35 degrees F) . It was warm to the touch within minutes and the engine hot within 4 minutes. The hoses leading to the radiator were warm within 5 minutes. The temp. gauge never went to the mid mark , even after driving for 10 min. the engine and radiator were hot as well as the heat in the car.

The sensor was located (many thanks to the diagrams supplied) and connection pulled and cleaned and reinstalled.

I also checked the radiator overflow....it was within 1/2 of top (cold).

No codes came up on this trip.

Have no idea what could possibly be the problem but it seems the car does not reach full operating heat as it did during the warmer weather.

What to do next????

Has to be your next move.

Here's the procedure:

JTIS - 1997 Thermostat.pdf

Worth checking the Water Pump at the same time.
