New member....which new car?
In an effort to not bore anyone I'll make this as brief as possible. I have aseveral roadsters mostly performance based cars some classics, some newer, some domestic, some foreign; none are Jaguars. My lovely wife of 14 years turns 40 this May and I'd like to show my gratitude of her tolerance of me with a roadster of her own. After some covert questioning she likes the looks of a Jaguar most. She'll most likely drive it approximately 2000-3000 miles a year, it will be garaged kept and I do understand the value of maintenance and don't mind making that investment.
Initially, I was planning on purchasing a 2000 or 2001 XKR but after reading some previous posts it sounds as though a 2003 or newer, (with the 4.2),would be the better choice. That's thrusting prices up into themid 30's to low 40's. Now, I've paid that much and more for my cars but I drive them a bit more regularily and appreciate the performance levels; she doesn't go over 55mph ever. So, I don't know that it makes sense to spend that much fora performance based car that won't be appreciatedso I've gone back to the drawing board and am now considering maybe a 1997 to 1999 XK8 which seem to be running in the mid to upper teens for a good one.
Now that you have some background here are my questions;
1) Anyone know of a good independent Jag mechanic in Tulsa?
2) I've heard that after 10 years a lot of parts go obsolete for the Jags; true? False?
3) How good or bad are the XK8's or maybe better put what are the most dependable years; excluding 2003 and up of course?
4) If I went with an older out of warranty car, (I wouldn't get anything over 60k miles regardless of year), how problematic of car should I expect? I hate to say it but it seems like the most common knock on the Jags are reliability and I don't want to spend 3k a year in repairs to keep it on the road.
Thanks in advance for offering all your hard earned knowledge,
Dave in Tulsa

RE: New member....which new car?
I dont know of anyone in Tulsa.
2003 up is definintly a nicer ride. If you don't want to spend for it, 2000 onward XK gets you out of nikasil land. Also, with the supercharged car, also comes the additional headaches of leaking seals etc.
Anyway, 03 up has ZF 6 speed trans and the 4.2,
If it was my choice, I would go that route.
You will always be able to find parts, just maybe not at dealer.

RE: New member....which new car?
Hi ! I can't speak to the possible mechanical issues because I've only had my '05 XK8 for a couple of weeks. I can tell you that Iresearched and shopped XK8's/R's for months before finding my perfect match. I quickly learned to limit my search to '03 and up, look for a Jaguar warranty, I didn't NEED the 'R', and that just about all dealers were willing to negotiate on the asking price - generally speaking I was offered about $5K less than the asking price. I saw many deals on e-bay, especially in TX and FL, I didn't have the nerve to go that route, but others do. I found local cars there to test drive. It is worth looking at the newer models and negotiating. Iam speaking from a womens perspective on this car (I do enjoy stepping into it a bit) - I had to convince my husband that this car wasIT - not to even try to convince me to look at anything else. If your wife likes the looks of a Jaguar XK(and who doesn't), she will LOVE driving the car and you may quickly see her driving over 55 and more than the 2,000-3,000 miles you expect. My plan was to drive on weekends, less than 5,000 a year, but I find myself looking for excuses to run to the store. Kind of like a 16 year old with a learners permit. I love driving this car ! The people on this site are great and give good advice. Good-Luck !

RE: New member....which new car?
Bought mine in Tx. Impulse buy (don't regret it) because I knew I'd have to put a few dollars into it (it's a 10 year old car). I've always owned used, same old arguement: 85k for new one ?or 13k for used one that will probably need some repairs? HMMMM...
Having electrical/ECM problems with mine (hard starting), but once it starts I don't want to shut it off ! It runs great and still looks good. I drive mine more than I thought I would.
If I put a couple of more thousand in it, I still have a great ride for under 20k with the same mpg's as most new cars.
If you got the cash though get a 2000 or better xk8 like FJT suggests.
That's just my 2 cents though.
