New XKR Owner
Hi, My wife and I just purchased a 2005 XKR with 27k mileage. The dealer we bought from suggested an extended warranty which for 5 years was a little over 5k. This will be used as our weekend / short trip vehicle so I'm thinking we may put betweeen 6-8k miles on it a year. What are the experienced owners thoughts on this? I typically do not buy extended warranties but this is a Jaguar
. Many Thanks!!
Hi and welcome!
My advice would be to put the 5k in the bank and use it to fix any problems in the next 5 years. My bet is you will have 5k plus interest at the end of the 5 years. That's practically a new car you have there, enjoy !

Hello, welcome and congratulations on an excellent choice of car.
Presumably you're getting something like 12 months warranty included which should give ample time to find any faults and have the dealer rectify them.
I've run many Jaguars as daily drivers over almost forty years and have never gone for extended warranties. However, I do enjoy working on my cars. The decision comes down to whether you have the inclination / time / facilities to resolve problems or prefer to put the car into the dealer for repairs. If it's the former, you've come to the right place to find many people with an amazing depth of knowledge. If it's the latter, perhaps best to buy the extended warranty.
Either way, enjoy the car.

Congratulations! Pictures?
27k is pretty low mileage, and you have a latter year which tends to have less issues. You shouldn't encounter any big issues. If it already comes with some warranty (maybe at least 6 months to catch any bugs that might surface) then I personally wouldn't bother with the extra warranty. However, I am less risk adverse and also tend to fix things myself....if you're someone who values a peace of mind and doesn't want to mess with the car yourself then $5k for 5 years extended warranty is not a bad deal at all.

Congratulations on the XKR.
It is down to your peace of mind and ability to worry. Me, I'd keep the money and put it towards the next car.
Also depends on how long you plan to keep the car, I would have thought that it has some sort of dealer warranty at purchase.
You say 6-8k miles per year so over 5 years you are only going to add 30k + miles to 27k.
I would be really miffed if I had to spend 5k in repairs on a 60k miles car.
And if you decide to sell it after 3 years you will have lost 2 years warranty money.

I don't know what's a reasonable amount to pay for an extended warranty, as I've been out of the car business for many years.
I do know that the only ESP's I'd consider would be the manufacturer's ESP. Some of the dealerships I dealt with made more money out of ESP's and credit life insurance than they did selling the cars.
At least the manufacturers have a desire to take care of their customers and keep past customers buying their products. Plus, they've made a fortune in the ESP business due to their dealer base and good resources.
Many people don't realize that many outside ESP companies have not been successful through the years, and have gone bankrupt. Unless an ESP company is underwritten (insured) by an independent insurance company, the coverage may not be worth the paper it's written on. I know of only one big U.S. ESP company that's insured, and they say so on their website. How they administrate their programs is another matter.

Bank the money, drive the car and enjoy. I have had my 2005 XKR Coupe for over four years and it has been every bit as reliable as any other European vehicle I have owned. As a group the 2003-2006 XKs are excellent cars. Just practice good preventative maintenance and you should be very pleased with your purchase. And, follow the sage advice provided on this Forum by some really outstanding Jaguar Techs and talented XK owners who have learned to work through problems that develope. You will find plenty of support from Forum members.
Enjoy the road ahead.

I agree. Warranties are always nice to have, but even a Jag shouldn't eat its way through $5000 in 5 years. I have had my 2005 for 12 months now and have only spent a few hundred getting her up to the standard I want... touch wood
P.S. we need pix!

she's a beauty! Love the color combo, and it looks like it has those Recaro seats that frog enjoys.
Spend $250 of your 'rainy day' fund and install a pressure reducing valve on your convertible top, me suggests.

Congrats on the XKR--I've had mine for 1 1/2 yrs. with only one problem which was a bad intercooler aux. water pump. It wasn't working when I bought it and figured no one knew it wasn't working because it gives no warning unless the I/C temps go high enough to register on the ECU. Other than that the car has been perfect. I also purchased replacement roof hydraulic hoses from Colliflower (info is on the site) which I've yet to replace---hopefully this winter. Since I only drive mine for pleasure I keep a battery tender on it most of the time because of all the electronics which seems to like a higher constant state of voltage than most cars.
Beautiful ride! I recently bought my 2003 XKR and decided against the extended warranty. I'm going to bank the cash every month, just in case. But it'll be mine at the end-If I don't need it. Congrats on the purchase.
