I use a soft cheap bed comforter from walmart to protect the fender and engine,as it will also allow me to lay on top of the fender or engine bay as needed, makes life cake work.

I ended up washing the car first and then using two bath towels. Not a scratch on my new paint.

any good cloth that is a little thick, make sure it has not been on the ground or if dropped make sure you shake it clean so no small "gritty" stuff gets on it and into your paint in the form of scratches.
