Default Oil level high after change

Every time I take my 2003 XK8 coupe to a garage for an oil and filter change, after the new oil is in the level is about 3/8 inch above the max line when they put in 7.5 US quarts. I checked it after I let the car cool and sit overnight. I check it in my garage where the floor should be level. The manual specifies 8 quarts. This happened with four different garages. The dealer says the length of the dip stick is correct.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I wonder if somehow you got an older dipstick in there ? see

Personally, I would use the level you measure after oil and filter change and 8 quarts added.

Other (remote) possibility is that the filters you are using are not genuine Jaguar OEM (which are inexpensive so no reason to use aftermarket) AND that they also do not have proper anti-drainback provision as they could be designed for vertical instead of horizontal mount. Admit that is kind of a long shot though and doubt that would make a half quart difference..

Do you have an oil cooler? (Does that make a difference?) I have one and my oil change is only 7.5 qts. with a filter change. Be very careful with over filling. If the oil is high enough the big ends can whip it up into a foam and then, poof, there go your bearings. I believe this may have happened to my my first engine (Thank you, IPO). When I learned (from the quoted thread above) that the XKRs and later XK8s didn't actually have a larger oil pan, but instead just a re-marked dipstick, I made sure that my level NEVER went over the high mark. EVER. I'd rather see it right at the low mark than over the high mark.

I admit, I may be a bit over dramatic about this, but "something" caused my original, sweetly running engine to start coming apart at only 130,000 miles. And over filling is the only thing I can think of.

Like any liquid in the car, it is difficult to get ALL the oil out. That is why 7.5 quarts is doing the job. I always add 7 quarts and the begin monitoring the dipstick as I add oil until it is in the correct range. After it has run a day or two, I check it again.

Putting in the exact amount assumes you have taken out the exact amount, which is unlikely.
