Default Primary Timing Chain Tensioners

I removed the primary chain tensioner on my 1997 XK8, the piston will not go all the way back in. Is there a trick?
Thanks,
Jay111

Are you refitting a plastic-bodied primary tensioner?

no they were replaced 5000 miles ago with metal ones but the car dropped a valve so I had to remove the head. when I unbolted the tensioner the piston came up to the top and I can only push it back down about 1/4 of the way.
Thanks,

OK - here's the procedure for retracting the primary tensioner from the 2003 W/S manual (metal-bodied tensioners):

LH and RH are the same procedure
