Default Rear 1/4 Window Regulator

After pulling apart the rear of my car, I gained access to the motor, track, & window via a cutout in the panel. How it works is ~ there's a cable that runs around a top & bottom wheel - with the window attached between them on one side, the motor on the other. Probably Hall Sensors tell the 'top' when is OK to raise/lower.
My motor works fine but...the cable keeps hoping off the bottom wheel of the assembly. I've pulled my regulator (motor) out and re-strung it while in the car. Fun that it was, It worked for awhile, but keeps hoping off. Any reason for this ? Obviously, I can't keep re-stringing this !

Also, how do I get the 'track' out of the car (obviously won't come out that hole and there's lots of bolts in there) ?

PS: I tried to send JagTechOhio a PM, but was rejected (full).

Thanks in advance,
Robert

If I recall, my 99 had a tsb on the window regulator. You may want to check if it applies to your 04

Thanks Gus; However, the TSB is not for the 04.

Default Somebody MUST know !

So, nobody knows how to get the complete regulator (motor & window assembly) out of the car in one piece ? There's no way the techs string the cabling while in the car !

Hello ~ Tech help please ?

...and if anyone has one for sale ?

you want a pic of the rear 1/4 window regulator parts diagram...will that help? I've never gotten that deep into the car before, nor heard of anyone else either.

Hey,
Sure, it can't hurt; Thanks.

Yeah, I haven't seen too many posts about tearing into their car here (except for the top's hydraulic lines). Its just that I'm pretty sure I can repair this regulator by reinforcing the track...and save A LOT of money. It shouldn't be that difficult, but need to know how ~ once I get the unit re-assembled ~ how to get it back.
I can tear it apart and reassemble it within the panel, but its SUCH a pain to re-wire the cabling.

Like I said, I'm sure somewhere here has done it !

JTIS starts with remove top. No personal experience but remember a post on the subject where the motor and regulator were separated and then removed. A quick search did not produce the thread.

Not sure if this will help or not but here's a TSB I found:

501-49
DATE
11/01 XK
MODEL
1999-2000
MY XK Conv. VIN
041998-A07948 Rear Quarter Window Regulator Failure - Excessive Bracket Flex - Repair Procedure
Issue:
Some 1999-2000 MY XK convertibles, within the above VIN ranges, may experience customer complaints of failure of the regulator for the rear quarter window. It has been identified that the rear quarter window regulator assembly base plate may be made from a softer than normal metal. Although this material is within specification, it can lead to excessive flexing of the base plate, subsequently leading to the drive cable becoming detached. To eliminate this concern, a reinforcing bracket has been added to the bottom of the assembly to improve stability.
If a regulator fails, replace the assembly with the latest level regulator. The opposite side must also be checked for the latest level component and replaced if necessary.
Action:
In case of a customer complaint of regulator failure on a 1999-2000 MY XK convertable, within the above VIN range, follow the workshop procedure outlined below:
WORKSHOP PROCEDURE
1. Place suitable covers over the floor and seats. 2. Remove the failed rear quarter window regulator assembly (see Workshop Manual, JTIS CD ROM, section 501-11, SRO 86.25.11).

Note: If only one side rear quarter window regulator has failed, inspect the opposite regulator to see if it is equipped with a reinforcing bracket (Arrowed area in Illustration 1.) If not replace both regulators. 3. Install new rear quarter window regulator(s) (see Workshop Manual, JTIS CD ROM, section: 501-11, SRO 86.25.11). 4. Remove floor and seat covers.

Default TSB 501-49 Rear quarter window regulator

Mark,

Please post your rear quarter window regulator TSB above in a new thread and we will add it to the TSB sticky.

Anyone having copies of TSBs not already in the sticky please post and get them linked.

Green, the links to the Alldata is being rotated randomly (and appearing incorrectly), if you want to use the correct images, you must screen capture and insert them in separately.

Rob, sorry, didn't get that diagram up yet.

I didn't understand what you meant by the above until I went back and read my post a couple of times and watched the screens change. Pretty slick!! NOT... Oh well I tried. I wonder if the other info that I sent to him in a PM does the same thing?

I've never seen that before.

green, do you have screen capture ability? If not, let me send you this small program that can do that for you. No install, just a copy/paste into a directory, then run the exe program get it going. its a photo editor with a capture command, very easy to use.

then you can at least attach the correct images with your TSB notes. PM me

Is ok. Just don't forget about me ! Everything so far just says to remove the 3 nuts (which I know) and remove unit ? Uh, yea it ain't coming out the top or bottom in one piece.
Gus suggested the trunk, which is a clever thought, but didn't see that either.

I just know this unit isn't installed in parts. There's no way factory guys string that cable on the line !

It is removed straight up . . . after about a twenty step process. JTIS lays it out with pictures but I have a screen capture/crop/attach handicap.

HarleyD was a master at that. We miss you Dave.

Step 1 is remove top. Sorta like the old Hayes manual on the Volkswagen Beetle; Step 1. Remove engine, see engine section.

The note on the R&R estimator deducts 1.0 hr from the 3.8 hrs for not having to remove the top. So all you have to do is spend 30 minutes removing the top, plus 30 minutes to put it back on. No problem.

I still believe that someone has posted on removing the assembly without the top work. Just can't find it.

I agree Tom (TestPoint) only I am unable to find it myself. I have been using PrintKey to do my screen shots so if you need it I got it. I will try to put it on my page if you and others want it.
