Sacrilege on my first post!!
Hi all,
Im new to the forum so please excuse my general ignorance. I am in the research stage in buying a 97 XK8, it has been a dream for years to get one and im now in a position to get one. The one thing that is slghtly worrying is the running costs, what with the price of fuel etc and in my country the annual car tax will be $2,000! My mechanic told me he knows someone who fitted a diesel angine to a 97 XK8, i know this is sacrilege but does it sound like something that could be done?? Or if not a diesel to change the engine for one that is more economical to run and tax,
any help appreciated (sorry for the sacrilege)

Fitting a diesel will kill the value of the vehicle (although these depreciate pretty quickly anyway). The cost of fitting a diesel will probably be much higher than the running costs and taxes on the existing engine. I would guess that even with an engine swap the taxes are still going to be high. These cars really aren't that bad for fuel economy, maybe if you stay in town the whole time (I get slightly worse in town with the XK8 than I do with my 1987 Mercury Cougar LS equipped with a 5.0L V8 and its not even DOHC like the Jag, although the Cougar does have a very free flowing exhaust) Out on the highway I can pull upper 20s mpg.
I do have to admit that, although it would never fit, there would be something perversely amazing about stuffing a Ford Powerstroke Diesel in one of these. Maybe you could shoehorn one in an XJS? If you are still actually serious, I'd consider staying in the family and getting Jaguar's AJ-V6D like the XF has: http://jalopnik.com/5119558/2010-jag...er-gets-35-mpg Likely very costly, but should actually be a performance improvement and get you better fuel mileage.

Thanks for the replies, the LPG suggestion is a good one however as the car will be used predominantly as a weeekend toy i am not as worried about fuel consumption as i am about car tax. At the rate of $2,000 a year i will have spent more on car tax than i will spend on purchasing the car after 6 years...that gets my goat! If the car runs off LPG, it will still be taxed at the high rate due to the 4 litre engine. I just love the styling and comfort of the XK8 and if i have to sacrifice horsepower so that i can afford to keep my Jaguar, so it shall be IF there is a solution. It is hard to convince the wife that it is worthwhile keeping a 'toy' that costs so much a year just to put it on the road, never mind the running costs!!!
I would not be worried about depreciating the price of the car by modifying it as they are so cheap at the moment anyway and when i get it i will be keeping it for quite a while.
