Default Some quick O2 sensor questions...

MY 2003 XKR.

Do xkr's have upstream and downstream oxygen sensors?

What does this mean?

Are all of these sensors the same?

Can a Ford or Bosch, or other aftermarket sensor be
substituted for OE sensor?

What would you recommend for a best price source?

Thanks, guys.

Ed.

From JTIS
Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S)
The heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) is a linear characteristic type sensor, fitted forward of the exhaust system catalytic converter.
The ECM uses this as its primary sensor to measure the oxygen content of the exhaust gasses within the exhaust system to provide closed-loop fueling control.

Catalyst Monitor Sensor
The catalyst monitor sensor is a non-linear characteristic type sensor fitted to the exhaust system catalytic converter.
The ECM uses this as its secondary sensor to measure the oxygen content of the exhaust gases within the exhaust after they have passed through the catalytic converter.
As well as providing additional closed-loop fuelling control the ECM uses this information to determine the efficiency of the catalytic converter.

There are many threads on replacements - do you have a problem? What are the DTC's?

Steve,

Thanks for taking the time to educate me. Greatly appreciated.

I keep getting the P0171, lean left bank code, and have read
that oxygen sensors can often be the cause of the problem.

I guess I have to improve my search tactics on this site.

I still tend to use Google although the site engine has recently improved.
You tend to find our site first in most Google results.
The 0171 can also be an intake leak after the MAF sensor so more air is getting in than the ECM meters fuel for.
With one bank lean you'd think it must be an intake manifold leak.
You'd expect a P0174 for the other bank if the leak was in the intake tract but it isn't always the case.
It helps if you can monitor STFTs with your OBD reader. This may show one bank far enough off to throw a code while the other is borderline.
There are many threads on finding the leak.

Have a look round and post again if you're stuck.
Don't just change the O2 sensor without a diagnosis.
Do download JTIS from the HOW-TO section if you haven't already - among many things it lists the specific DTCs for your MY - they can differ.
