Default Steering column memory

1999 XK8 steering wheel doesn’t retract anymore when vehicle is turned off, but hear the ding like I’ve left the key in. Open the door the next day and ding…not sure if that is draining the battery, I keep a battery tender plugged in.
Anyone have an idea what’s going on and how to correct?

Check the little trap door where the key fits. It sometimes gets stuck and the car "thinks" the key is still in the ignition. Lubrication is "key" here. Graphite-based products are great but can stain pants pockets. I would go with a silicone-based sprays, but not sure how durable it would be. And yes, this would normally drain your battery. On the flip side, you now have a (near) $0 fix to look forward to.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

I try to remember to lube the ignition switch trap door with powdered graphite at least a couple of times a year. Dab a small amount of powdered graphite on the tip of my key, then insert it into the switch and turn the cylinder. Remove key, apply one more small dab on its tip, and repeat. Thoroughly wipe off the key afterwards. Works for me....
