Steering Reach Fix?

Steering Reach Fix?
Hi guys,
Like many of you I have an issue with the reach function on steering wheel. The polymer "nut" the threaded shaft goes through is stripped and motor will often continue to cycle on auto setting causing battery drain, also, it just plain sucks that something isn't working right.
I have considered a couple if ideas to fix the issue, trying to avoid just replacing the entire steering column.
What I propose is to create a new threaded area for the shaft to engage on with JB Weld Steel Stik. The product is a putty-like material that, when kneeded, becomes pliable to shape and then hardens like steel.
I intend to drill small holes through the existing white poly "nut" to accommodate some wire (thinking paperclip) and build the putty around the shaft. When set the wire is there to keep the repair located and by forming it around the shaft, a new thread for shaft to travel through hopefully allowing for controlled movement of the reach function.
I realize by extending the stationary area the reach travel will be reduced somewhat, but at least some of the original function will be restored.
Any input you may have would be greatly appreciated.

Had some free time this afternoon so I set about repairing the threads as I mentioned in post 1.
Long story short, the reach function worked for two or three travels and then gave out at full extension. 😞
Maybe I didn't wait long enough for the steel stik to harden, maybe I could have applied it a little different too. I think the idea has its merits and could be made to work-just not this time.
