Stuck in France-AC issue
Hi Guys
I have driven down to the Lyon area of France on Friday to visit the outlaws.
Once here I could hear a grindy racket coming from the engine bay. On investigation its the AC compressor clutch assembly bearing that has collapsed.
I managed to get the compressor out by jacking up the front LH side and using the few limited tools I brought with me got it out.
Observations and questions:
1, The body of the compressor looks quite new and does not have any Denso lables on it but, the top, AC hose connection hood casting looks older. Like it may have been swapped out prevoiusly.
2, The compressor will rotate fine by hand without makinig any grindy noises.
3, When I inverted the compressor no oil ran out. I thought that these should have a certain amount of oil in them before they are chaged with gas?
4, Lots of used compressors for my year car have the electrical connections on them for the clutch but not anything else. My compressor has the addition pf a two wire component in the bottom surface of the compessor itself, do any of you know what that additional item on mine is?
.
Just trying to plan what to do next.....
Thanks for any comments
Regards
Wayne

Wayne - the wiring diagram shows wiring to the compressor clutch but ALSO a separate two-pin connector to the "compressor lock sensor" which is also part of the compressor.
Don't know what it does (senses the lock I suppose !!) but it should be there.
Parts list shows different units for Pre vin 019724 and Post vin 019725 but can't really see enough detail to see what the differences might be.
It is possible to buy a clutch repair kit for not much money ..................

Hi David
Thanks for the reply, I have spent ages here looking around and did find that lock sensor. The wiring drawing seems to show it as a pulse feedback so I guess my jags contol module will be looking for pulses back from it once it has requested the clutch to operate.
Thats my guess anyway. Once I removed the compressor I can see that it had no oil in it either so I have sourced one in the UK as a complete unit.
I think it was replaced a couple of years ago as a recon unit as they seem to have migrated the top panel and the old clutch unit over to the recon compressor.
My guess is they may have damaged the existing bearing which was totally destoyed and it killed the clutch and the electromagnet as well.
I am on the eurostar home this evening and will return down here on friday with the daily driver and and trailer to pick up the jag and the wife!
Got to leave someone here to keep an eye on the old girl (not saying who is who lol).
Thanks for your suggestions.
