Tapping sound on cold start and in gear
I have a 2001 XK with 125,000 miles.
Recently it has developed a tapping sound on cold start but only when I put it into gear.
The tapping happens only gear and cold. It goes away when I shift back to Park or neutral. And it goes away as soon as the engine warms up. Also, the rate of tapping is related to the rpm...higher rpm, faster tapping. It sounds like a lifter tapping, but since it only happens in gear...and it's a jaguar...I was wondering if, perhaps, it might be something else.
Any thoughts??

I have not experienced this myself, but from what I have learned from following the forums for a number of years it is likely from the vvt and not a worry. Changing to a heavier oil would probably eliminate the problem.
