TIRE QUESTION

Greetings! I hope to be an XK8 owner soon, in addition to my 2006 S-Type, which I absolutely love. Can anyone answer this question? Do you think it is OK to drive a car that has 6 year old Pirelli tires with only 3000 miles of wear on them? For safety reasons, should I consider replacing the tires eventhough the tread is good? I'm looking to purchase a used 1999 XK8 convertible. The car is absolutely flawless and has 34K original miles, 3K of which was put on over the last 6 years. The tires were purchased in 2002 and look brand new but are at least 6 years old.The car was well maintained and tire rotations were done as per schedule. What do you think? THANKS!!!

I just purchased a 2002 XK8 with those same tires, that are pretty new. But after doing lots of research, I am going to switch them out (even though they are almost new) to a Michelin Pilot PS2. I am switcjing them due to the ride and wet handling. The Pirelli tires don't seem to last to long and all the reviews that i read, said the Michelin would soften the ride and last longer. Just my opinion.
The Pirelli tires that came on my 02 XKR were not very good - especially in the rain. Granted my tires are 20" and the rears are very wide, but still - the Bridgstone Potenza RE960's I have on now are much better than the Pirelli's.
Yoursix year old tiresare near the low endof the range, which varies from 5 years on the low side to about 7-8 years on the high side.
Most OEM sources cite six years as the maximum tires should be run. However, other credible sources I've read suggest that most tires are safe up to eight years. factors to consider are exposure to ozone, UV rays, heat and cold.I am on six sixyear old BridgestonePotenza SO-2son my 300zx, a car that only been drivenabout 8k milesover thissix year period. Idont haveany concerns about tire safely; but then I am not about totake it up to 150 mph either. gordo
