Transmission Leak
I have a fluid leak from the 722.6 transmission in my 2001 XK-R. The culprit is the pilot bushing (bulkhead connector), apparently not uncommon with these transmissions. As expected, the dealer's quote was three times what it will cost me to do it myself, so it's going to be a DIY job. I will change out the pilot bushing as well as dropping the pan for a good look and then refill. The dealer prices for the pan gasket, bushing, filter and new locking pin are eye-watering and their $75 a litre for fluid is a bit hard to swallow (no pun intended). Found a couple of excellent videos and the job seems pretty straight forward.

I'm now shopping around for the parts. While I am thoroughly familiar with the MG/Triumph world for that sort of thing, I'm much less so for Jags as I've only had the car a couple of years. So, any advice or recommendations on the following would be appreciated:

- the servicing process
- sources for the required parts
- a suitable fluid (available in Canada) that is not liquid gold. I have looked at Mercedes sheet 236.14 which shows OEM approved alternates.
Hi,
So London, Ontario, I guess
Take a look at this thread:

It may give you some indication of the what and where to obtain parts, although I don't see a Canada-specific source. Mobil ATF 134 and its Fuchs Titan 4134 equivalent seem to be good for the fluid.
Note the multiple warnings about using non-OEM parts.

Pistnbroke - yeah, it's the London out in the Colonies mate.
I am Canadian but also Australian and British. Moved around a lot. I was living in the Cotswolds for a few years not so long ago. Thanks for the ATF recommendation and apologies for the confusion. I've just amended my profile a bit.
Michael - That thread was a good read, lots of useful info. I've been through a fair bit of that minefield already for the ATF. I'll stay within MB 236.14 and I've located one on the list, Shell ATF 134, that I can get here at a good price. Yup, with my other classic (1972 Aussie made MGB roadster which is here in Canada with me) and other Pommie classics over the years, I'm well aware of parts from Chindia. One gets to know the trusted suppliers but as I mentioned, I'm fairly new to the Jag community so still casting about for sources with this car.
Thanks for the reply gents.

Oz Dave,
Call your local Mercedes dealer, they will have the correct oil, filter gasket and parts for the transmission, probably in stock. You may be happily surprised at the cost? I know I was.
While you are at it it get six new bolts for the pan and new drain plug, it may strip trying to remove it. There is an updated plug.
Easy job, but you will have to purchase a transmission dip stick as the car doesn't come with one. Lots on line or the Merc dealer will have one.
Regards,
Karl

Thanks Karl. I did try our local Merc dealer a few days ago. Didn't have any success because their parts manager said they can only look up and supply parts using the VIN of a Mercedes model. "Its the way their system works", I was told. A rather unsatisfactory response I thought. Surely they could have done something yeah? Oh well. I bought a good quality transmission dipstick online as I want the ability to check fluid levels on a routine basis.
As of yesterday, I'm pretty much ready to go on this job. I've bought all the necessary bits from reliable sources, avoided Chinese tin and found a good deal on an MB endorsed fluid (236.14) - a pack of six Shell ATF 134 through Amazon at an excellent price. As soon as everything gets here, its up on the stands and "job's on".
Cheers,
Dave
